altho i haven't picked it up yet a couple of days ago i brought another Volvo, a 2002 S60 D5 SE. I originally was just looking at any reasonably priced diesel to use for daily duties & after test driving a few from other manufactures was quite disappointed by the level of comfort in them. Having had my 850 for 10years with no problems i had a look see what Volvo had to offer, S40's always seemed a bit small for me so went to look at this S60. It only took me to sit in the drivers seat & i knew i'd found what i was looking for (aslong as the seller would move enough on the price

not sure the cream leather is a good idea for me really lol

it has got a few niggles, mileage is 150k which is a bit higher than i'd like. Th gearlever gaitor is really worn (already purchased a new one off ebay for £10) & it needs a new lid for the centre armrest/cupholder cover as the hinges have broke

but i couldn't believe the equipment list on it

STC traction control
full electric windows
cream leather
4disc in-dash prologic stereo
cruise control
twin cigeratte lighters (one front one rear)
dual zone climate control
trip computer
heated front windscreen (didn't know this was available)
& obviously all the usual electric mirrors etc

over the weekend the garage is putting a fresh 12month MOT on it, 2 new tyres on & servicing it, for £2550 i really don't think you can moan :)

when we turned up he'd still got the window sticker in for £2995 so got almost £500 off his original asking price (it was advertised at £2695 on ebay & Autotrader tho). After putting up with BT for so long i think i can manage with a bit of rattling from the armrest till its replaced lol

tbh i didn't notice it but my bro did, i thought it might of been demist as well but he says the button was seperate to the normal heater controls & paired up with the heated rear window button. So tbh it is only a guess but is a Ford man so just taking his word for now, it took us a while to figure out how the trip computer works so i'll have to have a read up on the owners manual

been & picked up Bonny this afternoon & to say i'm impressed is an understatement. Reset the mpg when i left & she had averaged 62mpg when i got home, it was upto 65 but went down with the city driving & traffic. The garage had done most of what he said he'd do, 2 new tyres, service, fresh MOT & new rear pads which it failed on during the test (he hadn't changed the wiper blades tho). Altho i've only had a quick play i'm not as impressed with the pro-logic stereo as i thought i would be

& it turns out it hasn't got heated front screen, it was the normal heater demist (& i haven't got heated seats either)

altogether tho you really can't tell its a diesel & got to be the most comfy Volvo i've been in

all i seem to be doing with the S60 is chasing blown bulbs, while replacing the rear sidelight i couldn't help but do another mod. Taking the bulb holder out i noticed there was a spare bulb slot on the passenger side, figured out it was the fog light so tried a bulb in & it all worked, took a minute of messing trying to get the holder back in before i noticed they had blanked off the hole in the lense but that was easily fixed lol. Got twin fog lights now :bounce:

Congrats on the new ride fella, and the HID's are going to be a vast improvement over the standard halo's.

As for turning the DRLs and the auto lock on or off and other stuff, it might be worth seeing if anyone knows a diagnostics tech who can give a good deal. Maybe if people have somethings to query, you could organise a day place to perform on multiple cars, the more the cheaper, but only if the diag guy has a wicked rep and he has the volvo bluetooth tech.

Duane, 19's man, you are always pushing the boundaries, will look wicked if you get them... oh but wait wht about the ride height... unfortunately when does it end.... thats right it never does, just like a home, always something to do.

I'm thinking of maybe doing the same but I'm put off by a few things

1 - my s60 always seems to blow its bulbs and have a bulb out. This can range from main beam to sidelight to rear cluster lights. Im thinking it could be a wiring problem or just bad luck. Would I get similar problems if fitting the HID kit?

2 - Do you have to remove the HID kit and revert back to standard lights for an MOT test?

3 - Am I likely to be pulled over by the police for having the HID kit?

Any advice would be appreciated as I'm not happy with the poor distance the standard lights get on a dark unlit road at night.

tbh i'm not sure how strong or carefull you have to be with HID bulbs, i wasn't exactly carefull when i fitted them & i've still got bits of glass rolling round in the reflector housing & all been OK so far. Except for the passenger headlight the bulb chasing seems to have stopped

2 - Do you have to remove the HID kit and revert back to standard lights for an MOT test?
from what i understand the MOT won't be a problem as the light pattern is still the same

3 - Am I likely to be pulled over by the police for having the HID kit?
i followed a cop for about a mile this morning & he didn't stop me, i've had people comment on the colour of the light but they've all said there not getting blinded by them

The S60s and V70s can suffer from brittle plastic on the bulb connectors from the heat.
Min occasionally has a bulb warning on the dash. Turning the lights off and on or thumping the light often fixes it.

Make sure it is not this before you change the bulbs.

Yes I seem to have realised this is the case most of the time. But the problem is the 'tapping'/'hitting' gets the light working again until it starts becoming more frequent and then the bulb filament blows.

Keep us updated fandango, would like to know how these work out on a daily basis and in the long run.

hey fandango, could I ask which bulb type power & temp you chose when ordering your HID kit from this guy?

Also, if the bulbs fail or blow over time would you order more directly from him or are they available elsewher/from a shop?

I want to get the right balance and keep them as sidelights and my worry is the 5 LED may be a little dim and the 9 LED a little bright. Fandango, are your 5 LED sidelights 'just right' for the amount of light omitted?

Also, Would these fog light LEDs (http://www.autotronicsuk.com/lighting-/h1-led-foglight-bulb-new-p-425.html) be OK to replace the standard ones? Or will a warning light come up in the dash?

Can you access the fog lights without taking off the bumper?

your comments/worries are about right i'm afraid. The's are a bit dull, but doubling the amount will put them into the DRL's area. 5's are ok at night but can't even notice them during the day

Personally i don't like the idea of having LED foglights, i don't think LED's will have the beam length for them to be any use for there purpose, they'll look lovely on your Saxo driving around town but no good when the mist comes in. As for changing the bulbs tbh i don't know, i'd of thought you must be able to replace them either from underneath or by pulling the arch lining out instead

I guess its because the LEDs are white light and the light is less noticable during daylight than the standard 'yellow' bulbs.

So are you keeping your fog lights standard? Just thought matching the white light would look nice but you are right, they wont be serving their purpose if changed to LED.

Still not sure about the 5 LED or 9 LED...I guess the best way would be to order both and see which ones work best.

i'd probably be tempted to go for the 9's, having them too bright has got to be a bit better than too dull

Ahh..I see what you mean. Not too sure about getting LED sidelights now, as I prefer the stock sidelights during the day but at night LED looks far better.

I've like the fact the Volvo has DRLs as I am a firm believer in that lights are not only to help you see but are also there for you to BE seen.

....hmm perhaps standard sidelights (yellow) with HID kit for main. That way its best of both worlds.

Either way, thanks for taking the pics.

The HIDs still not brought up a warning message in the dash?

tbh the only reason i brought LED sidelights is because with the HID's on you can see a very slight yellow twing from the original sidelight bulb

I've like the fact the Volvo has DRLs as I am a firm believer in that lights are not only to help you see but are also there for you to BE seen.
the only reason i was going to get the DRL's turned off was because i thought the lower voltage would play havoc with the HID's module, but its quite happy just to activate them so i've got HID's as DRL's

Also tightening all the other bolts up to release the pressure on the locker helps.

tbh i very rarely drive hard, but yes got to agree the handling isn't bad at all & alot more neutral & an improvement over the 850. I think the main grip is down to the wider tyres, going upto 225 from the 850's 205's was a wise choice. The rear suspension is also more complex & an improvement over the 850 (which i find tends to come out a bit too easily).

last weekend i had a "naughty test-drive" in the new S60, & they really have moved the handling up by 3 notches & leagues ahead

Aye , dunno if its the urban slog, or the 6-speed slushbox, but computer avg hovers around 36-38mpg, so approx 490miles to a tank.

It is £££££ compared to the S60. didn't expect that.

Did you notice that much improvement from replacing the intercooler? My V70 D5 has had a noticible gradual drop in economy over the last few monts (Started out about 45-47mpg, now mostly getting 40-42mpg) just in time for the gradual increase in cost of fuel. Any way of checking before I commit to a new one? There is some oil on the plastic under-tray under the radiator area, but it's not exactly awash with it.

2003 V70 D5, 160k miles.

Main reason for replying to your thread (good looking addition to your collection BTW): Cone filter on a D5?! I'd considered it briefley just because the engine sounds so good loaded up as it is. How obnoxious does the cone filter sound?

I focus on the change in induction sound, mainly because I already accept that I would get a defacto 20BHP increase by fitting it...

There is some oil on the plastic under-tray under the radiator area, but it's not exactly awash with it.
my fuel economy went down to 45mpg with the blown intercooler, & back upto 50.2mpg now

thanks, the filter's just what i had spare in the garage. You do get quite a bit of noise from it, on part throttle you can hear it sucking in air then the hiss as you let off. On a normal everyday family car i think it would annoy the wife

got given a 12" amplified VIBE box for Bonny, but i'm not even sure i'm going to bother fitting it because of BT's old amps coming as the owner doesn't use them (then the question, 12's or 15's?). I am quite scared that even tho Bonny is meant to be the daily drive she's following exactly the same route BT took lol. Ordered a Powerflex top mount & the bushes for the stabiliser bar

yes ive knackered sub's in the past from not running them in correctly. Ive had myne for about a year now and its still getting more responsive all the time. Can kick some serious base out. Ive only got the gain up to around half way at the mo. Im running it off a 400 watt VIBE amp.
First 6-8 months i only ran the gain at about a quater and im just slowly turning it up. Think id break something if it was cranked up to full. The trim on the boot rattles like hell when youve got it cranked up at the min so thats somrthinf i need to fix.

i'm trying to get an old PS series Kenwood mono-block off a mate who's not using it, it was mine originally so good to fit in it Bonny. Or Halfords have got some Vibe amps at very reasonable prices, 700wrms for £112. I'm going to have to half the size of the box to get it fitted tho & bit concerned about them splitting once the powers turned up then

http://i791.photobucket.com/albums/yy196/pedro-fandango/Volvo/mine/BT/Stereo/nys1.jpg

The kenwood one's would be good to get back off your mate. Ive had a few kenwood amps in the past and they were always good for the power delivery. I had a 1400 watt kenwood running 2 1000 watt JBL subs and jesus they were loud up until the point they went bang when one of the weak little spade connectors snapped off and shorted against the other. Not good. LOL
The VIBE one ive got at the min seems fairly good like. Plenty of adjusment to tweak the sound nicely.
What size MDF have you made the boxes out of?

seems like panic solved, i've calculated the area wrong so can half the size of the boxes lol. I'm using 18mm mdf. The Kenwoods were good but they split the 2 subs in half so changed everything to Vibe. I don't think these are going to manage the power but it'll be a laugh see them go up in smoke lol

this is the website i used to work out my area calculations were totally wrong LINK (http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxcalcs.asp#rec). I always do sealed boxes, did try a ported box but sounded terrible & not as punchy as a sealed box

Sunday 11th September 2011, 21:42
Never tried a ported box before but i had heard that they wernt as good. The first box i made i just guessed the dimensions and didnt realise they were so important untill a started using my sub's and they sounded crap. Pulled it all out after a week and started again.
I made the mistake one time of making all the box to go in my saab years ago and then realised aafter i'd carpeted it all that i couldnt get it through the boot opening. A got quite angry with it and took me chainsaw to it. Not for the first time either. LOL

The only reason i asked about the box size is that i got my sub/amp as a vibe package with the sub alraedy mounted in a box and it miles smaller than the cubic capacity that they have recommended to you. I dont think its actually big enough for the sub as when you crank it up it sounds like the cone is to tight and distorted. The back seats will be like massage seats with those 3 subs going. i'm surprised Vibe would supply it in a box too small. The spec i've gone by is from the booklet they supplied with the sub, i've gone for the smaller out of the recommended sizes. Doesn't look like i'm going to get the amps off my mate so going to go for a Vibe Slick A7 in a fortnight when i get paid (1x700rms@1ohm). I used to have 3x15"s in my 850

i do enjoy the wood work so sure once it's finished it won't be long before i start again lol. What i normally do is push the box as far forward as it can, then make a floor panel that fits behind the box & fits tight against the rear panel to clamp it all in place

I never bothered putting the end caps back on my amp either because i couldnt get them to go on properly when all the wires in place plus it makes easier access to get at the knob to crank the gain up. Having the bass adjuster mounted there will be handy. Least you can adjust it as the mood suits.

Thats right, stop wasting your time and money on a tractor and get bt on the road.

All your doing here is making it heavier and that'll make it even slower!

Which way you going to route the cable for it? Can you getfrom the boot straight to the centre console or are you going to have to go round by the dash and bring it back to it?

i was going to try & to the dash then route it with the phono-leads i've got to feed down the sills, we shall have to see i might have to try & go straight back via the transmission tunnel lol

i've never seen a Kenwood with an adjuster, & theirs a bit of a league difference between Kenwood & Vibe lol. The wire does look quite a length looking at it now, started on the Jacques & watching the F1 or i would go out & start wiring it lol

i did buy a cap for BT's system but never got round to wiring it in, i went for twin batteries instead. Bonny's battery is in the boot anyway so the power loss will be less anyway

Have you ever tried any FLI speakers before or what would you recommend for good value for money?

yeh i'm going to get 2 of the 4channels, currently buying from Halfords because they've got some good online prices (reserve online then collect instore). I've not heard any FLI speakers only subs. I'm a Kenwood man, you can't go wrong with there stuff

not looked at there stuff recently but used to be very overpriced & very basic compared to the others so wouldn't touch them.

My bro used to be an auto electrician for the local car accessory shop, they had the sales rep come round from MB Quart while i happen to be there & gave us a demo. The sound was leagues ahead, but the £500 for a pair of speakers put me off a bit lol

2 x Vibe 4 channel amps reserved, i think Halfords are desperate to get rid of them because i've lost count how many texts, emails & phone calls i've had from them saying there ready & i can pick them up. Got no money till tomorrow so there going to have to wait lol LINK (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_77 6801_langId_-1_categoryId_165526)

the subs will all be ran off the centre amp, ran in parallel to take the ohmage to 1.3. The outer amps are both 4 channels. 1 will do the front speakers, 2 channels doing the tweeters & mids via a passive x-over, then the other 2 channels doing the door subs (which i think are 8":)). The other 4 channel amp will do the rear doors off 2 channels, & parcel shelf from the remaining 2 channels. I'm going to replace all the speakers with aftermarket one's so might just get the subs wired for now

i don't think the bass is going to be a patch on BT's 15's, but think the sound quality will be better because of the speaker positioning on the S60. Plus i've never had such variety of speaker sizes in the front before (good old Volvo for putting 3 in each door lol)

i'm sure there'll be an Avon meet or something where we'll meet up

Yes the S60's do have a lot of scope for a good install. Trying to decide what i want to do with myne at the min.

yeh it is, but i'd go with a solid single flywheel instead of the dual mass when you replace it next, it'll be alot cheaper

DMF's can be quite fussy things, think mines starting to moan a bit

been looking into Autoleads speaker adaptors & looks like you can fit 6.5's all round in the S60 (front & rear doors & rear shelf). 2 of the speakers in the front doors are tiny so not worth going 3way, which means i've got 2 channels spare off an amp :smirk:
