There's a '98 V70 T5 up on Ebay that's been clocked. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=9872&item=4531266132&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW It was originally listed last week with a claimed mileage of 119k. I won the auction, ran a HPI check and it came back that the mileage was 159k when it left the police back in June 2000. It looks like 100k has been taken off the clock. I turned the car down and the owner has relisted it. I don't believe that the seller had anything to do with the clocking. If anyone's interested in the HPI report, I can mail it over.

Yep, let's hope the warning saves a few people a nasty surprise. Shame that sellers get the option to not include questions people ask along with their ads. I am almost tempted to keep an eye on it, and email the winning bidder warning them.

Seller has included mileage statement:- "119,000 MILES - (RECENTLY UNDERGONE 120,000 MILE SERV) RECENT HPI CHECK SHOWED 159,000 MILES, HOWEVER, I HAVE PAPER DOCUMENTATION FROM PREVIOUS OWNER STATING 101,000 MILES." Which is good and honest of him.

You have to be very carefull with ex police as speedos often come out for recalbration , so unless you have FSH and mots its very difficult to know the true amount of miles.

Given that it /may/ have done 160k, or 120k as the owner says, that 40k discrepancy could prove an extremely expensive mistake (honest or not) if someone assumes that the odometer is correct (i.e cambelt change due in 20k). I'm not sure about the volvo service schedule, but is there anything else that should have been done, that may not, if the current owner has the incorrect mileage?

Working on an average of 12k miles per year since June 2000, the probable actual mileage is in the region of 220k. From the HPI report I can see the likely culprit - in 2001 one particular owner only held it for 4 weeks. But that implies that its being having the wrong service schedule applied for the last 4 years and 40k - 50k miles.

if the car has been clocked the easiest way to check is bu plugging it into the mbu doooooo daa thingy under the armrest or ashtray depending on model and on any lucas or volvo or other operating systems it will tell u the exact mileage if the speedo has been changed and there is a memory chip in all volvos that will tell u the mileage even if the speedo has been changed or digitally altered u cannot erase this imformation at all

Close friend of mine won an auction for a (non T5) 850 on ebay on Monday - good price but not too cheap. rang the Volvo telephone bods to do a check on the car. Listed on ebay at 120-130,000 Volvo said the last record they had of it was 3 years ago at it's 300,000 mile service  The seller was genuinely horrified as they had the car for a year and not known - didn't know about the Volvo telephone bods. I'll get the plate if you are interested, I'm sure that it will re-appear on eBay as the seller needs to get rid I think. At least you know that the 850 is good for well over 300k and not showing too many signs of age (unlike my knees this cold cold morning(.
