I had a industrial chemist of some variety in worth a few months back, he was banging on about using acetone in fuels and how it massively improved fuel economy, I lost interest after a while as he had a smell of drink about him but he was saying their was implications with using the stuff, what those were I cant remember!
it would be interesting to keep an eye on the thread. to see what there conclusion is. some people say it is fine others are not sure. i can get hold of acetone quite easy. might try i in my log burning astra 1st. if it does give nearly 10% improvement thats is a big saving over a year.
Yeah true, was never into chemistry much myself so cant work out the theory side of it. It just sounds to easy and such a simple solution as to why its not been done before, but on the other hand why would the oil companies want people to use it, less demand for fuel!
Hi, Acetone is nail varnish remover ! It probably has helped 'yanky boy', but only because it's cleaned out his fuel system (injectors etc) and if he switches back to straight diesel he'll find the economy is still there ! Word of warning: you don't want to spill any on your paintwork when your 'dosing up', as the resulting cost of the paint removal and repair will far outweight any improvements in fuel economy ! Regards, Hamish.
If im not mistaken acetone on its own can seriously irritate the skin and also has major health implications if inhaled, although thats from memory of a good few years back!
If im not mistaken acetone on its own can seriously irritate the skin and also has major health implications if inhaled, although thats from memory of a good few years back!
Your 100% Correct, which is why the oil companies don't put it in fuel and another good reason, not to use it as an additive. "Gee Honey it's really cool my car's 0.5 of an MPG more economical, but the Kids have all died ,the trees in arr street don't have leaves anymore and nextdoors dog' grown another head !" Regards, Hamish.
Valid point as im sure cats fitted to cars wont filter out the harmfull crap that would be produced if it was used as an additive, although I doubt the yanks will care anything at all about that!
I forgot about the cat Most modern diesels have a Cat and Acetone will soon Monkey that up. " Gee Honey look at all this money I've saved with my 0.25 MPG Fuel Consumption improvement, hey just think by the end of the 10 th year I'll have saved up enough to replace that broken Cat, GEEEE ain't that swell !" Regards, Hamish.
i'll just wait and see what the results are. before i can pass comment.
i'll just wait and see what the results are. before i can pass comment.
Jeez. I'm already getting 48mpg ++ who needs more than that?!?!?!?!!?
hers a bit more ino on this thread.. http://www.pureenergysystems.com/news/2005/03/17/6900069_Acetone/
Been reading this myself, will continue to do so also... Very interesting, nice find.
that link is veryinformative well worth a go imho
further reading Q. How well does Acetone mix with fuel? Very well. Acetone has a 100% solubility rate, even in water, so the mixture formed with gasoline is complete. (This comment is being investigated) "If there is water (even small amounts from condensation) in the fuel and the engine is fuel injected, especially diesel engines, the acetone will form an emulsion with the water and corrode injector pump and damage injector tips, according to GM and various fuel injector manufacturers. Check with your vehicle manufacturer before using." http://peswiki.com/index.php/Directory:Acetone_Additive:FAQ#Q._What_do_I_need.3F
Not to point out the obvious health risks to people and the fact that you will probably have no cat left very quickly is their any point in even thinking of using this just to add an extra mpg or two on your economy?
not really any health risk involved .... if it were that dangerous it would not be used for nail polish remover the small quantities they are talking about are no rel risk at all
not really any health risk involved .... if it were that dangerous it would not be used for nail polish remover the small quantities they are talking about are no rel risk at all
You do have to wonder why it is that fuel companies haven't added this miracle chemical to their fuel already, there must be a good reason for it!
You do have to wonder why it is that fuel companies haven't added this miracle chemical to their fuel already, there must be a good reason for it!
money being one of the first things i reckon would mean they sell less wouldnt it
money being one of the first things i reckon would mean they sell less wouldnt it
Nah, if they could get a product which would increase your MPG more so than Ultimate/Optimax/Whatever they could charge enough for it to counterbalance the fact that people are topping up less. Interesting though, wonder who'll be the first to try it from here?
I might not sure if i got any here but going on a 250 mile round trip tomorrow would be interesting
Had a word with a friend of mine, who is a chemist in the petrol chemical industries. he said that this would not damage the cat as it is boiled of at room tempreture. also very small quantities are used and it is also a petrol by product. might give it a go in my log burner.
hi another bit of info............................http://www.industrialnewsupdate.com/news/oil-energy/archives/oil_energy_prices/index.php
Sorry for resurrecting the dead. Anyone ever try this then? Heard about this when I was running a Mitsi L200 and getting 23-25MPG, but never dared to try it (read good and bad, plus L200 was a company car and I wasn't paying for the fuel :D). Anyone tried it in a D5? Any problems with doing so?
