850 T-5R 5.5k rpm rev limiter?

Sorry for the questions but i was just wondering what the rev limit is set at? Iv searched but cant find anything in google.
Im not one for bouncing off limiters, but on a drive out last night i thought id try revving it out right up to the limiter.
I was in 2nd gear and it cut in at 5.5k rpm. Is this right? Seems a touch low to me but i dont know!
Cheers
Craig

You have a problem there, are you sure it was rev limiter and not spark blow out? I think rev limit is around 7.5k rpm

Not fuel cut? Do you have an mbc on the car

No, bone stock apart from a 16t turbo as far as im aware. What could be the likely cause?
Post 806384 by jamesy12345 on 2016-10-21 11:00:07
Stock boost should be around 11 psi? Do you know what the boost gauge was doing at the time of the 'limiter' coming in...the gauges aren't very accurate but might help with diagnosis

I didnt think to look to be honest, il have another go tonight to see whats what! The turbo has the blanking plate over the recirc valve thing. But i dont know where it should be fed from or anything

Right, its deffinately 5.5k rpm limit, neutral or in gear.
It deffinately sounds like rev limiter and the boost just drops off slightly when you hit the limiter stood or driving.
On my private road when it hits the limiter in 3rd thats approx 90mph - 95mph, how does that compare to others? It sounds fit as a fiddle so im thinking the taco is out to what the engine is actually doing? Possible?
Things iv found out, the car wheel spins whether the tracs button is on or not so im guessing that doesnt work and also the cruise control doesnt work so is it possible fuses could have something to do with this? Holding it back maybe?
Post 806414 by claymore on 2016-10-21 19:07:22
red line in third on mine is just shy of 100 mph as that's usually the speed and gear I cross the line on the quarter mile.
Post 806415 by jamesy12345 on 2016-10-21 19:12:31
You can calculate engine speed back from road speed and gear ratio. If you post your tyre size up I can do it later when not on my phone (& pissed). Is the ABS ok - light on then off after ignition?
Post 806416 by Craigyt on 2016-10-21 19:42:48
So could be the taco! It was a blur cos my private road wasnt as long as i thought!
Yeah abs light comes on and goes off after ignition!
Its running 205 45 17 tyres, standard size as far as im aware!
Post 806436 by jamesy12345 on 2016-10-22 08:17:41
With that wheel & tyre size, 3rd gear being 1.19:1 and final drive of 4:1...
*5500 rpm is 83 mph
*6500 rpm is 98 mph
So if the speedo is 8-10% out then 83 mph road speed equals about 90 mph on the dash. Speedo can be checked with GPS/sat nav

As far as I remember the rev limit on both my T-5r's is 6500, but these can vary a bit dependant on the map being run, as I lost a 1/4 mile race against Frankie when we swapped ecu's to compare our cars and his limit unknown to me was approximately 250 rpm lower than what I was used to with my HLM304, thus I hit the limit before I expected to change up, I fluffed the gear change and just lost the race by a few metres.

my old t5r use to do this , I never got round to finding the issue but am sure that the lad who has it now fixed it over on t5d5

You think you could find out his user name or find out how he did it?
Cheers

This is where the boost gauge sits

as standard I would expect it to go half as far again..ie 3/4 of the way across the white section. my last one was going to the 3'o clock position and now is in the garage feeling poorly.........tap tap tap.....oops!

To could potentially be a tcv problem?
Post 806460 by Shinsplintz 101 on 2016-10-22 21:18:08
It's limiting the boost. Either you have a boost leak, incorrectly routed pipework, a dodgy actuator or TCV. Or all of the above.
If you haven't already changed all the boost hoses then that be a good start.
Tingy on T5D5 had Lee's old car, it's looked after by Tim Williams. He's strapped a bloody great Garrett turbo in it now, so it's fair today they've got over whatever boost issues it may have had previously :)
Post 806463 by Craigyt on 2016-10-22 21:39:08
Right ok, well when its on boost it sounds like theres a hissing noise but not a high pitch screetch like normal boost leaks.
If i stick my head down the back of the engine and rev it a bit you can smell exhaust fumes like theres a leak before the cat!

my car never had any boost isuses , ran 22psi and a 14,3 @101 at York with the 5.5rpm

Boost issue/rev issue....whatever....it had a problem as you stated above....the op asked for a pointer at who'd fixed it. Simple as that.

yes it is simple as that , my car never had a boost issue simple as that , doubt the boost issue with the car is causing it not to rev past 5.5k .
and I wasn't having a go in the previous post simple as that
Post 806484 by leet5r on 2016-10-23 11:29:49
could be down to the ecu , or the wrong clocks could be fitted , I never managed to find the cause so cant help you more sorry
Post 806493 by Craigyt on 2016-10-23 13:38:32
How do i check the ecu? Will the chip have a code on it?

swap it for another known one to try it and see if the problem still exists
Post 806509 by Craigyt on 2016-10-23 18:36:30
Anyone got a known good one i can try?
Post 806539 by Craigyt on 2016-10-24 20:28:24
Im only seeing 18-21mpg, there or there abouts! Thats steady driving aswel. Should this be cause for concern other than for my wallet!
I checked all boost hoses, inlet, throttle body etc etc but still nothing! If the engine is redhot and you stick your head down the back over the exhaust manifold, rev the car a bit you can smell exhaust fumes, like proper fumes not fumes that have been through a cat converter!
Leaking manifold gasket? Cracked manifold?
This wouldnt stop the car from revving past 5500rpm though, but that is really starting to wind me up, i need it sorting!! Is there any tell tale digns that the ecu has been swapped or played with?
Post 806542 by Doingitsideways on 2016-10-24 21:27:20
If the ecu has never been touched, there will be a tamperproof screw/bolt holding the lid on the box under the bonnet.
Still certainly sounds vac related to me.
Sounds like it's overfuelling to compensate.
Have you tried spraying carb cleaner or similar around all your inlet/boost/vac hoses while the engine idles?
If the idle changes at any point, you have a leak as it's sucking it in.
You could have a cracked manifold I suppose, but I wouldn't have thought that would stop it booting/revving properly until it had pretty much snapped!
Post 806546 by Craigyt on 2016-10-24 21:58:52
Yeah. I have read about doing a stage 0 on the car but it was serviced and belts etc done before it was fitted into the car, but, the service light is still flashing at me!
Im thinking its vac related aswel, iv got some pipes behind the headlights in that area that arent connected. Are the headlight washers vacuum activated or could this be my problem?
Post 806558 by Doingitsideways on 2016-10-25 11:24:51
No.
Headlight wipers have motors.
The lines you're seeing may be from the washers on the arms.
Try the carb cleaner trick around every joint you can find on the inlet side of things, including the manifold-head.
Post 806564 by Craigyt on 2016-10-25 13:55:36
Right il try that tonight. It seems worse when the engine is hot!!
Post 806565 by Craigyt on 2016-10-25 13:57:31
What i did notice last night in it while driving is in 1st 2nd n 3rd theres is more boost on the boost gauge than there is 4th and 5th!
