Snabb have made the short shift kit for V70R S60R cars again. I got mine to fit so thought I do a how-to guide. So here it is. Image First job remove the gear knob which is very easy just push down & turn then it just lifts off. Image Then just pull the trim up from the roller cover it unclips no screws. Then the silver dome is held in with clips no screws. Image Image Then you need to pop the L/H ball joint.I used a big flat bladed screw driver . Image Then remove the 3 screws that hold the black plastic ring around the rod. Image Then remove the white plastic surround it just lifts out. Image Then remove the spring type clip from the shaft sorry didn't get a photo, but this is the clip. IMPORTANT TIP have a very good look at the spring that centers the gear knob ,and the plastic stops for it ,I didnt so had a funny five minutes when refitting it. Image Then you need to remove the gear cable from the bottom of the gear lever, I used a long 17mm spanner it just poped off . Now you can lift out the gear shaft assembly, you need to remove the white clip around the ball & "O" ring Image I had a new holder but to be fair the old one was fine. Image Now you need to remove the bolt & steel bush that fixes the base to the car. Image Image Now you have to trim / cut a plastic web out or the shift cable will hit the web. I used a die grinder as I have one . Image Image Then I did trim the steel bush. Image

Then refitted it. Image I did renew one of the ball clips as it was worn . Image Then fit the New shifter into the holder, you can then refit the ball joint onto the end of the shifter. Image Then refit top ball holder. Image Then refit black ring with the 3 screws. Image Now you need to get the centering spring in the correct place ,push the arm unit back into place , note it needs to be lined up with a cut out in the base unit then refit the holding clip. Image Now you need to refit the 2nd cable ball onto the new shaft , it's easy to get to it if you remove the side trim.. Image Now refit the dome cover. Image Then top cover surround & locking pin into the top of the new shaft, then refit the gear knob... Image Image Also get a sticker . Image Before and after. Image Image So off for a test drive and enjoy. I found it a lot more positive, the hight of the gear knob is approx 20mm lower , the throw from 3rd to 4th gear is approx 40mm less so it now feels much tighter, very happy with it. :) If you think you need one then it's . http://snabbuk.co.uk/products/04-07-r-short-throw-shifter-kit

I was thinking it replaced the linkage at the gearbox end. That'll explain my confusion lol.

Very similar to the setup I had in the Cougar, has it weighted the shift up by much?

Well after a long Sunday which started with replacing main headlight bulb, followed by lots of swearing, and breaking tools replacing the front drop links, I finally got round to fitting my snabb short shifter. Image Feels nice and tight now, i decided to thread the shifter in the lathe before I installed it, I made the shift knob myself, it came out ok but I'm going to have another go at one at a later date, also added a sheath to the shaft to fatten it up and cover up the grove that is there without the standard gear knob that was irritating my finger
