I have recently bought an 2006 XC90 to discover that due to adverse emissions test results the road tax is a whopping £490.
Can anyone throw any light upon why Volvo with their years of experience of producing excellent engines could 'fall foul' in such a spectacular manner.
The fraudulent antics of VW is still fresh in peoples minds and one would wonder if there will be any reduction for XC90,2006,owners of the cash cow collection of £490,
or are we as cynics in the belief that the VW issue will be swept under the carpet and XC2006 owners will have to pay up and look happy.

That is ££££ then My V8 is £500 a year, but you'd expect that. Surely the 2.5t or 3.2 isn't £500 a year tax!

Mines a 2006 and I was very careful which I bought I needed an auto 2002-2004 rubbish 5sp auto and 163 bhp, must be the slowest thing on earth.
2005 on 6sp auto (much better and durable) and 185 bhp, but March 2006 (21st I think) it's £500 a year road tax.
I bought early 2006 (same as the v70r 7 days later it would be £500)
As to the reason no idea, the 2005 plus has a dpf and cat so show emit lower emissions

Its got nothing to do with volvo. The tax system is based on CO2 emissions and any cars that produce between 226 and 255 g/km have to pay £490 a year.
I'd have thought all XC90s after 2006 would be either £490 a year or £505 apart from the D5 manuals.
Just FYI, you'd be surprised what cars are in the £490 bracket. For example, if my s60 2.0t auto was 2006> it would be £490 a year as it produces something like 230 g/km.

Neither the dpf or the cat will reduce CO2, as they aren't designed for that.

I've just realised that even though the s40 t5 geartronics, after 2006, are £290 because they produce 224 g/km. But the v50 t5 geartronics are £490 because they produce 227 g/km.
You really do have to be careful when looking at cars after 2006. The Saab 9-3 2.8 v6 turbo and the subaru legacy 3.0r, i've been looking at are both £490 a year.
Actually, after checking, the saab is £505 lol

Both of mine have been removed and still it Pasted the emissions test, so maybe something in that lol.
I though dpf was for the soot and cat to reduce emissions

Yes the dpf is to reduce soot (diesel particulates) but the cat is to remove Hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides.
I'm not 100% sure but i think the cat actually increases the amount of CO2 given off, because it's converting the hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide into CO2.

The 3.2 is £505, not sure about the 2.5t.

Many thanks for all the replies and comments.
Just looking at my V11 renewal form the emissions on my XC90 is 239G/KM only a tad over the figure I would have 'got away with'
One comment was it was not only Volvo. I understand that but my argument remains as to why makers fell foul and drifted above what was acceptable and what was not. This of course we actually believe in all this greenhouse gases ££££££££ !!
Also I see nobody has commented on the VW fraud. If they get away with it what chance will 2006 XC90 owners have of amended emissions figures.

When the car was new, the tax rate wasn't that much higher than other cars
