Hi all,
I have just received a telephone call from what sounded like an Indian call centre. The female operator introduced herself as being from Microsoft and told me that my computer has been generating numerous "error reports" over a long period of time, apparently many of which would be done without my knowledge.
My PC which is running Windows 10 wasn't switched on at the time and she asked me to go turn it on to get "the problem sorted".
I wasn't convinced and asked a few more questions and was told very firmly to go switch my PC on at which point. I refused and ended the call.
Is this normal practise or a scam?

I don't know tbh....It seems I go through a spell every now & again getting the same phonecalls, I politely tell them I don't have a computer and say goodbye before putting the phone down.
I reckon they're after remote access to your PC....scumbags

I get this call about once every 7/10 days and have done for months. Somewhere at some time I have obviously ticked an ' ok to contact me ' box on some form and then later down the line this info has been purchased by a marketing firm
And we are supposed to live in a data protected era

I have just googled the number, which I should have done before mithering you guys and it is, as Steve thought a scam.

A very convincing 'Scam' call I had recently was supposedly from the 'Telephone Preference Service' asking for my credit card details so they could link my number to a UK address.....she spoke very good English and was VERY convincing....I gave them Stribo's credit card details :B_thumb:

I started getting calls from India trying to scam me into letting an " engineer " from my local power supplier into my house straight after the Talk Talk data hacking incident.
They knew my name and address but could not when asked, tell me who my power supplier is.
Next time they call I am going to pretend I am some dithery OAP and make an appointment for their guy to visit.
Now where did I leave that baseball bat.?

I don't even believe bank 'fraud teams' when they call me to warn of dodgy goings on with my credit or debit card - first thing they ask is please confirm your name, what is your date of birth etc. Could be anyone asking that. I always just say 'I'll call the bank/company in question myself thanks, thanks for the heads up'

I try not to call people up & scam money out of them though. That's my rich uncle's job

Never trust any call from anyone, let alone calls about your computer.
It maybe just a coincidence that you have windows 10. I picked up a call once at my mom's house and they asked about a windows 7 pc. I told them it wasn't running that OS and sternly asked them why they thought I had a windows 7 pc to which they hung up.

In a strange way these scams make sense... Clever poor people relieving stupid rich people of some of their wealth.

Apologies Pliskin I did not mean you specifically I was just musing on the fact that anyone who does fall for one of these scams has been duped by someone who is often poorer but cleverer.
Having said that I imagine many of these fraudsters make a fair bundle out of their nefarious trade and are far from poor.
It reminds me of the guy who wins the lottery and is asked by the press" what do you intend to do about all the begging letters ?
"I'm gonna keep on sending them " he replied.

that's what they think though, these cants that call you up - we're stupid & rich enough to part with a bit of our millions cos they are too lazy to earn it. Scum.
Joking aside the country where I am now is famous for it, I don't have a landline just a mobile & get regular calls & SMS messages about various bull££££ offers. Occasionally my family members back in UK & other places get calls from Nigerian numbers but I have warned them already with a code word I will say if I am really in deep ££££ for example. Otherwise, ignore!
