In an ideal world, I'd love to keep two Volvo.
However I must get rid of one due to lack of space.
I have my daily, a 2001 V70 T5. So far I've had it remapped, a one-box stainless cat-back exhaust, new coil pack, new handbrake cables and shoes, 2 new front wheel bearings, plugs, oil etc 4 new Goodyear Eagle tyres. 97,000 miles. More importantly it's had the Marelli TB converted to contactless which made a huge difference to the car. everything works apart from the aircon, a few marks on the rear seats.
I may have accidentally bought an 850 T5 for about £300. It's got 180,000 miles on it, body underneath is solid, it's been looked after (mechanically haha!). Had a timing belt at 157,000, new shocks. It's had welding done but after looking I can't find any evidence of a repair - because I later found out a whole panel was replaced at Volvo (this was the upper part of the NSR strut mount) Rear lights are needing replaced, they're badly faded. ABS and TRACS work, it had a new ABS module a few years ago.
How good are the 850's? Do you think I should sell the V70 and keep the 850?

My 850 has done 50-60K over the last 3 years, used everyday and hasn't let me down once.

850's are simpler and less to go wrong.

add my 850 11 years now never let me down bloody brill car

Thank's those are the kind of responses I was hoping for
I love the feel of the 850 more as well, feels raw. The V70 just feels a bit heavy - despite managing a 66 second lap of Knockhill!
Being an older car, I wasn't sure if there were any high mileage parts which might be needing replaced soon.
My 850 brakes are a bit crap though, almost as if they are unassisted. but they do squeal so maybe a set of pads might do wonders.
What's the going rate for P2 V70 T5's these days?

850s are old cars now and if it hasn't already it will need a thorough service, they hide their faults pretty well so if you carry out a stage 0 you'll see a performance improvement in that alone. I buy all my parts for FRF Volvo Swansea as they offer very good discount and can source parts many consider to be unattainable.

It had a service last year, don't quote me but I think it was at a Volvo dealer. The oil isn't even black, coolant is nice and clean as is the brake fluid.
I've just done the dizzy cap, leads and plugs because it developed a misfire. The dizzy cap was disgusting inside, it had never been off. contacts were green and badly eroded.
It's all these "hidden faults" that it's good at hiding that are putting me off. the "what could go wrong" element.

Off past experience you will probably suffer with binding brakes due to the slider seals going on the calipers, also keep an eye on the oil/water as the oil cooler seals go.
Definitely worth the change although I've never owned a p2 I think you'd be better selling it & spend the money on the 850. ;)

Yeah,
I was also thinking of occasionally using the 850 on track as well
I has having a nosey about earlier too, and I came across the diagnostics socket. it says it's OBD-II!? Is this right? didn't think a 1995 car would have that.

Yeah I think they did but not as easily tuned as the later 4.4 Ecu but it's easily changed.
Some decent suspension & brakes you will have plenty of fun on the track

It's got enough power imo. the plan was shocks, springs and brakes - maybe just good pads? Maybe polybushing - some people seem to have a hard time with these though so I've heard!
maybe some aero bits and pieces but nothing too outrageous ;)
What's the difference between whatever I've got, and the 4.4?
Just think I might miss my P2, I've not even had it that long. It's fun running 1.25Bar boost at the moment.

Brakes I had 302's with ferrodo ds2500's. They would be enough for me.
Suspension people tend to go for bc coilovers or koni yellows or bilsteins.
The 4.4 ecu's are easier to map & plenty of maps available. Oblark on here is the man to speak to.

I was going to go for a basic B6/8 and Eibach setup. coilovers don't do it for me, I'd never adjust them anyway!
As far as the ECU goes, I should have clarified, can the older loom be modified to take the later ECU. Does the later ECU engines still have Cable throttle? I suppose I'll have a gander through the 850 section of the forum.
I'm clueless when it comes to ECU's, unless it's D-Jet or K-Jet.
Post 791745 by Biff on 2015-11-22 22:04:46
Yes mate both my v70's were cable (pre me7).
I think it's a case of swapping the loom on the older car. The 4.4's are fitted to pre April 98 v/c/s70's with a turbo so wouldn't have to be a t5.
If it were me building another (I will someday) I would be on koni yellows with eibach springs, but it's your preferences. I poly bushed my top mount, bottom under the gear box, arb's & subframe bushes.
It was lovely. :)

good idea, think I'll get my V70 up for sale then! I've never sold a car before, what do I do? :haha:
Any ideas how much my car would be worth?
Post 791753 by Mart5in on 2015-11-22 22:28:58
Also, I've no idea what trim level my 850 is. There's no clue on the V5, MOT's, anywhere. "Volvo, Estate, Green, 2319cc".
It's full leather interior, drivers seat electric with 3 memory. heated seats, aircon, headlight wipers and washers, cruise control. 6CD changer and "premium" sound system.

V70 T5 P2 would fetch about £800-£1000 right now depending on condition
Don't none of you guys prefer the solid feel of the P2?
I'm just about to buy a P1 as a project and whereas I agree about the less complicated setup,I much prefer the P2's comfort and interior solidity as a 3k a month mile muncher, does nobody else like them? lol

Any chance of trying the 850 out for a couple of weeks before you sell the newer one? They can be great cars but any older car can accumulate work to be done
All the things you've done to the V70 may need doing to the 850 in the not too distance future...not the ETM of course....but that 300 quid could quickly head towards a grand
