Looking at getting an audi a3 for the mrs, around 2004-2005 MY. She wants an auto so i can drive it, but they all seem to be DSG boxes and i've heard a few bad stories about this type of box (not just the audi ones), when they get old. So does anyone have any useful info or experiences regarding these boxes?
My mate had an R32, he had a fair few software updates on it but he hammered the back out of it. 100 miles to £40 was a regular thing. I used to see a girl with a brand new 05 golf gti dsg & she got it to poo itself everywhere. I think if they are looked after & not launched every 5 mins then you should be ok.
When we had the problematic vw, I read dsg boxes being replaced as little as 4k miles and many many issues with them.
Not forgetting the WORLDWIDE recall of the dsg boxes for an oil change. Tbh they are good boxes just plagued with issues.
The other thing we found was the petrol and diesels but especially the 1.4, if you park on a hill in gear and have it in a gear not in the direction of the hill I.e facing uphill in 1st. Enjoy starting the car the next day as the timing belt is slackened and jumps teeth, it's quite common.

To be honest mate, after 10 years it would have probably ££££ itself everywhere if it were going to. Worth checking the service history though to ensure oil changes have been done at least every 40k miles
Lots of clutch type plates inside with a shelf life of approx 100k that an expensive bill in the future
Go for it, I will probably get gunned down on here. They are a brilliant box. As long as they are serviced every 40k (oil change) you will be fine.
Intact sorry reading the year you are after you could still be in the megatroniic box and they ain't that good. If you can stretch to around 2006 it would be better
Get a manual licence and go from there lol
We've been looking at the 2.0t versions and they do seem to be quite cheap, possibly because they have box issues. It would seem that it would be better to buy one thats done more than 100k, thats had the "clutch" done, than one thats done less than 100k, that hasn't. You seriously can't drive a manual?
DSG is a bit different to normal autos in the feel and drive, you can try mine if you want Liam.
V70Graham had issues with their DSG Golf, I'm sure he could fill you in.
But I have to admit I look the look of the new merc a145 Amg and I think that's got dsg too .i know one thing they go very well off the mark .and I trust an auto in a merc than any other car .

Worth checking the service history though to ensure oil changes have been done at least every 40k miles[/QUOTE] 40k miles is the manufacturer recommendations but I`d advise every 30k change the auto fluid and filter,especially for what it cost.DSG is actually more manual than auto box,the have problem sometimes with a mechatronic unit which can be fixed most of the time.You do hear the horror stories but I have a few customers taxi drivers that keep on going.
Yup. One's just gone past me from a standing start. Damn that thing was quick and from the split second gear changes, I'd say definitely a DSG.

Its just the reliability i'm interested in.
