Im trying to pick my next car, my Mrs and i have had plans to buy our own place but long story short she lost her job and i said we should be sensible and wait for her to get a new job and be in at least a year before making the jump.
After continuous problems i sold the dodge ram, turns out i couldnt drive it on my license anyway, woops!
Ive still got my little 1.4 tdci fiesta to bang around in if i want to save fuel, so this motor will be purely for pleasure, and tinkering!
After the truck i want something fast, ive got around 7k to spend. Ive narrowed it down to two motors, both mercedes. S55 amg (V8 Supercharged) or an S600 (V12 twin turbo)
I like luxobarges, so its always been an s class as top of the list. 2003 + to avoid rust issues.
S55
-Official AMG motor so the kit, brakes and a few other tweeks
-Sound, whine up front, roar from the rear
- Higher price to buy
-200kg lighter
- More ''RAW'' than the S600, agressive.
S600
- Pretty much came with all options from factory. Soft close, Tv, distronic cruise etc
- Luxurious. Alacantra headlining. More leather. Burr walnut trim.
- The engine. 500 hp and 590 ft lb as stock. An ecu remap takes it to 620hp and 700 odd ft lb. Thats more than a 4k level 3 performance pack for the S55.
- Exhaust is weak sounding stock. Sounds DIRTY when opened a little.
- Heard alot about reliability. Some say same as the S55 some say worse. Not sure whether myth as some people who have owned say its worth every dime. Obviousely im not driving it every day so if it sits broken for a week or two bo biggy.
- Described as ''buttery smooth''
Ive also found myself looking at E39 M5s for some reason. I dont like bimmers but i love the blue colour they came in. Mercedes are only ever silver or black. More of a drivers car, manual! 400hp stock and the rear looks amazing. Front not so much. Doesnt sound as dirty as a benz V8 more raspy.
I know you lot have a broad range of experience. Any input?

To be fair Chris, he has a point there! ^^^^^^^^^^^^

Ive told the mrs i need a toy to keep me happy before we move out.
Call me old fashioned but its going to be 50/50 on property between us. If that takes her a few years for her to save her half then so be it - i earn over double what she has in the past so putting more money aside isnt an issue, im in no rush.
So yeah, S55 or S600 :D

Here's an new idea.....Go for the one you like the most, both are superb cars
Post 752168 by mitchyboy01 on 2014-12-19 09:09:24
I've always earned twice as much as my missus. Everything still gets split 50/50, bills, spending... everything.
Nice cars though. All the ones you mentioned are immense.
Post 752172 by Nealevo on 2014-12-19 09:27:09
Both great cars, with huge bills if something goes wrong (coil pack £1200)
M5 is a better drivers car and more fun, but doesn't come with the AMG noise.
Also consider a Vauxhall Manaro, so much fun and not that bad to run 6.2V8
X350 Jaguar XJR supercharged V8 all aluminum body, luxury, very quick cars and easy to tune
Just enjoy whatever you decide to buy

My Dad brought himself a 52 plate CL600, awesome car but boy did he have problems with it - all electrical. Constantly fuses here, bits there, suspension problems, the list is endless and parts are expensive. His was low mileage.
Any other type of Merc's are fine but those with all the fancy electrics can give you trouble.
Save yourself a bit of money and pick yourself up a E39 M5. A friend of mine has one - its currently running 519bhp, it drives amazing and sounds like a beast. So much easier to work on too.

Monaros are way out of my price range being over 10k.
How is his E39 519 bhp? they come pretty much maxed out from the factory. Lots of pennies will get you around 430 but after that its pretty much supercharge or go home.
Was his CL600 the biturbo? Ive heard before 2003 they had some build quality issues

Which ever car u get enjoy
Post 752184 by Ettienne on 2014-12-19 11:00:10
I am in the same boat, it's not buying the car that's the issue, really want an amg or vxr8 or similar but it's the repair if it goes wrong.
I only drive 5k a year and have been looking at all sorts, just don't really want to pay out a fortune on a car that does the school run.
So I've decided just to keep the beater of a p2 and tune it a bit and if it goes wrong I know I can just get it fixed cheaply.
But a vxr8 seems quite basic so most likely would be less hassle or as Neal says a jag?
I've had the conversation with the wife after all the p1s are finished off about buying something else and a cheap diesel estate to run around in.
By cheap diesel estate I do mean 535d touring.

Ended up bringing home an S55 AMG yesterday ;)
Post 753160 by siamblue on 2014-12-25 22:42:37
never got a chance to reply before you got the car,but i class cars like these as cars that can bankrupt you,not only are the running costs huge,if something goes wrong it is going to cost you 1000s..
Post 753168 by merc85 on 2014-12-25 23:22:02
Re coil price only ref to the v12's, the 55's are different nice choice btw, is it the S/c one or n/a?
Post 753204 by Palmer on 2014-12-26 12:50:32
Yeah i read alot of horror stories about the V12. The 55 seems to be a much more solid motor.
Ill get some pictures up soon! Its the supercharged one.
The colour made me have it, dark blue. Most amgs are silver or black haha

good luck with the repair bills, love the way not one ££££ is given when your girlfriend is struggling for money and you buy an s55 lol, thought money was shared these days lol
Post 753319 by Palmer on 2014-12-27 00:44:32
Shes not struggling. Not yet anyway id like her to have some job security before we move though. Anyway few piccies of the S55 ;)

Looks smart, are the wheels the correct to the car, not seen one of those with that wheel style before?
I love how the standard Merc AMG exhaust set up compliments the car but shouts power and speed!
