Hi all.
Was going down motorway slip road last night when an almighty bang came from the front end of car, it was such a bang i thought i had hit something,
Almost certain it had jumped out of gear aswell - anyhow carried on and came off at next junction, when pulling away got wheelspin from the front so AWD is lost, almost certain it wont be just the sleeve,,,
Will investigate when rain stops and report back,,,.

Sounds like angle gear has self destructed.
Not a lot of people service them.

Yeah, the problem is they all seem to weep, but people never check them, and top them up when the car is serviced. Ours is done every year.

Mine only lost 50mls from its last service (if it ever had one) but it's the later type, maybe they have better seals.

Mines on the original angle gear and collar, which has been inspected, both were said to be ok, when engine was put back together.
Fortunately I've serviced all 4 gearboxes now, not that, that makes them fool proof just a better chance of being more reliable.

Ours has been resealed twice, but still weeps, just have to keep it topped up.

Had all the oils done last month, angle gear, diff, aol, and gearbox oil, had the car 2 years angle gear was bone dry back then,

Arse.. Sorry to hear it, I've got a spare colar and angle gear in the shed but it's off a 99 V70R which I think is a different system isn't it?

Be tragic to break it for that, will the car not run without like the Ph1 cars?.. Is it not worth finding a second hand unit?
Be tragic to break it for that, will the car not run without like the Ph1 cars?.. Is it not worth finding a second hand unit?
Yeh it still runs same as the Ph1 cars, it just spins up now where before it gripped and off, probably can find a second hand unit, but how long would it last is my concern,,
early days yet gonna have a nosey over weekend take it from there.

Hopefully it's just the collar.
Post 747121 by Craigy t5 on 2014-11-08 12:49:08
Jacked the car up all 4 wheels off the ground, put the car in gear front wheels turn with a grinding noise from the angle gear, the prop turns very slowly-think this is just friction, rear wheels don't turn.
So still not sure if its the sleeve or angle box, suppose the only way is to get the sleeve off or is there another way of checking?
Oh checked the AWD fuse thats ok, lol

Sounds like the teeth or bearing have disintegrated. Not good news sorry to hear.

OK quick update so far,,, Angle box off and stripped down, bizarrely the sleeve that normally goes is all ok and intact, oil lovely and clean, whats happened with this is where the angle gear meets the gearbox it has stripped the splines there instead ( this is the other end of crown wheel ) the gearbox side does not seem to bad,,,,
I know an engineer so will see if he can do anything with it.

The main gearbox output shaft is ok?,but the input shaft on the angle gearbox is worn ?.
I don't think Volvo sell angle gearbox parts ,they comes as a complete assembly I believe.

Thats correct gearbox output shaft is ok,and input shaft on angle box is worn,, hopeing to have the end of input shaft re splined/toothed? if possible,, failing that new anglebox,.

so is this the transfer box that's gone south and causing the problem?

Quick update,
Sleeve now off, one black-eye and cutface later,, used a puller and heat it came off, not easy but do-able,,,
Next step, brand new anglebox and sleeve,,,, dont know what hurts more, the cost of it all or the injured face, lol,

They are sealed unit but can be rebuilt, have a look on the p2 tuning thread there is a guide. Early ones had chocolate shafts and splines, that wear smooth out, however you can save a fortune by welding the collar on so it doesn't fail again, even on worn out parts, again in the p2 tuning thread.
