Your thoughts please I'll be going maybe start with who is interested? Ettienne plus nicci and Evie (will have to be a half term)

Dependant on dates etc, we'd quite like to go.
dates and money depending sure id love a roadtrip!
I fly it's £50-70 return, but don't let me put off drivers as we could always meet up out there and make if no one objected use them to get around (not that you do much driving). It will take some organising, I'll look into it. Just a list of interested peeps and if flying or driving

Yeah I'm up for this, would want to drive though.

Post 739219 by JamesT5 on 2014-10-03 12:44:58

Driving to Sweden would be a real trek and what if a car breaks down? I'd be so tempted by a trip like this though if the price was right.

Post 739223 by stephenevans99 on 2014-10-03 13:27:49

Driving was my preference, but since they've stopped the Harwich to Esbjerg route it'd be a proper trek, Rotterdam to Gothenburg is about 800 mile or 11 hours :O
Driving to Sweden would be a real trek and what if a car breaks down? Rough costings based on my own car, from north essex £400-500 fuel, £250 harwich night crossing, (very roughly) £160 bridge tolls, although I'd probably get the ferry out of Kiel to gothenburg as the extra cost is what you'd spend on a hotel anyway, then £1000 min for hotels and living for 2 people for 4-5 days.

Real shame about the esjberg ferry, was planning a trip to Gothenburg before it was mentioned on here but this has put me off now, although i'll go if we're doing a forum trip.

Post 741674 by 70fan on 2014-10-12 09:48:00

Sounds like a good idea. I could well be up for a road trip.

Post 742336 by Doingitsideways on 2014-10-14 22:30:00

So, when are people looking at going, if at all? Gothenburg is something I'd love to do, but like all things it would boil down to money. Especially with my first baby due in February! Would love the road trip too, and shouldn't be as bad on juice if I took the dirty diesel (as long as noone minded holding back for me!) But again, would boil down to money. So, anyone have any rough ideas? When, Costings, Weekender, that sort of thing?

Post 742340 by Saaamon on 2014-10-14 22:40:53

I put an idea of costs up on page one but that was based on my car, I already have breakdown and the legal stuff like triangles, hivs jackets etc. it's two days driving one way, in terms of dates any time before April and winter tyres are needed.

Post 742345 by Ettienne on 2014-10-14 23:04:32

Definitely won't be a weekend as they don't produce cars then most likely a Tuesday / Wednesday affair

Post 742355 by Doingitsideways on 2014-10-14 23:53:52

Ok. I saw the post on page 1. Was just wandering if prices were much change throughout the year? Ferrys etc, are priced higher in summer, aren't they? Much like flights. Must admit though, that unless it's later in the year, I'm out. Don't think it would be fair to leave the Mrs with a newborn so soon.

Post 742375 by Saaamon on 2014-10-15 08:26:12

Dover calais prices can be dear in summer but the other routes don't change to much.

Ok I'll be speaking with Gburg tomorrow and will try 14th October, they are a bit laconic with responses. But I'll update the thread when I know more. This would mean meeting in Gburg on the 13th!!!! Staying overnight and factory tour and museum on the 14th to fly home the night of the 14th, so on,y staying one night!! Cheapest way to do it flights are currently 50-75 return. Edit just sent email they are closed until the 7th. I made enquiries for the possible use of the entire 2015/16 range of cars.

Ok I have heard back from Volvo today They are able to book the experience centre for us where we will be able to drive the entire 2016 line up of Volvo cars. I have said provisionally 10-20 people, they can allow access from just one person. A rough itinerary Flight from stanstead (or your choice of airport) 9.30am arrive Gothenburg (Tuesday) 10am bus into town. Then a full day in Gothenburg Vpc night out! 8.45 factory tour (wedsnesday) 10am driving experience, test track full 2016 range including hybrids Plus Volvo brand experience. 1pm lunch at factory 2.30pm Volvo museum 5.30 it shuts, then onward via taxi for me to airport, a few hour wait to 8-9pm flight. As you can see this is the cheapest way and only requires one nights stay. Currently £50-70 for return flights from standstead £50-75 for hotel These prices are a rough guess The factory tour is free, but there is some cost for the driving experience I shall have to confirm price once I know numbers. There may need to be payment for the driving experience as this would need to be booked.

Post 755831 by Ettienne on 2015-01-13 11:49:06

Fly or drive to Gburg factory if you've not been then you have seriously missed out. Cost last time was £200 for flights, taxis, hotel, plus food extra (although this can be cheaper booking ahead) I flew from stanstead it was £70 return 1.5 hour flight. Iam not the person to ask about driving saaamont5 on vpc is organised and driving there. Rough itinerary 13th arrive Gburg 10.30am All day in Gburg and evening out as a forum or as individuals, depending on what you prefer. 14th Blue train 08.45-9.45 (around factory) Brand Experience Centre 10.00-11.30 (was crash test facility last time, plus new cars, amazing stuff) Lunch at Restaurant Varianten 11.45-12.45 Demo Centre (driving) 13.00-14.00 (driving the 2016 range of cars) This is the itinerary from Jeanette. Cost of the driving is £28 per person, which I believe covers just there costs. This would be the only cost apart from lunch, which I believe may be free also "the famous Volvo Swedish meatballs" 14.30-17.30 Volvo museum around £6 to get in. If in wrong section please move. The £28 for driving is all that is required so I can book that but I'll make a cut off date for that of mid march, depending how much notice the factory needs as this gets booked up quickly

More than happy to run through the driving with anyone who has questions.

Curtesy of tt82 Volvo owners club As for driving, I did it a few years ago. It's 1,300 miles (From Manchester) and took 2 full days. Ferry from Dover to Dunkirk via DFDS takes 2 hours and costs about £50 depending on the number of people in the car. The Oresund Bridge has a toll which is a cash payment of 47 Euros each way. There is a transponder pass which is cheaper per crossing but fee's mean you need to do at least 2 crossings for it to be cheaper in total. The Storebaelt Bridge in Denmark is also a toll bridge and costs 18 Euro's per crossing. Overnight stay can be free (throw up a tent in a Motorway services/picnic area) or for a small cost in a Travel Lodge type hotel. Fuel costs obviously depends on speed and how many people are in the car. Generally your looking at £300-400 roughly. Other options are the ferry from Germany to Sweden to avoid the bridges but I don't know what costs are like! The Harwich to Esjberg ferry route is now closed. I followed the same route Clarkson took in the race to Oslo. Going across the top of Holland. The Oresund Bridge is quite fantastic to drive across. Does this help you at all saaamon, please correct if you need too. Flying maybe the best and cheaper option for some, I used Ryanair.

Post 755872 by Saaamon on 2015-01-13 18:11:27

That's a really decent write up. Only thing I could add is, the car must carry 2 warning triangles, as many hi vis jackets as there are passengers and they must be inside the car, headlight beam stickers and GB plates or sticker. I don't bother with the breatherlizers as the French abandoned the idea but the ferry companies still push it. I use RAC for yearly European breakdown cover but they do single trips as well, only other company that I could find who'd cover my 850 was kwik fit.

That's good there is a few interested now. Just to confirm the only thing that needs to be booked and paid is the driving experience, ive asked for 10 spots and it's 280sek £28 approx. You don't have to take part in this but the opportunity to drive the 2016 line up on a test track at Volvo seems a bargain. This I will have to put an end date on, ideally ASAP.

I have to give the factory a number for the driving experience I have said 10 people and most likely 15 for the factory tour. I will need to collect the money for the driving experience as this needs to be paid up front, other than this £28 per person for 10 or £42 per person for 5. I am trying to keep to 10 spots to keep the price as low as possible. May be possible to increase the number later on if available. They will not hold the booking long and have already said that it can be booked by others.(factory tour is fine, that's all booked). Please contact me via pm to arrange payment.

I have opted to eat at the restaurant (possibly free), this is a corporate experience and not the usual factory tour, I don't think people realise the opportunity and how good the experience is. Last time we got to see the crash test facility.

OK. Can you confirm dates now please as i need to know because I work shift and may need to jig some holiday around. I'm interested in driving there too. From what I can gather, it is possible to get a ferry from Harwich to The Hook of Holland in Rotterdam? I have Winter tyres so that won't be a problem. Can also get AA breakdown cover for the trip. Who else is driving? Cruising at 60-70mph I could easily do 400-450 miles on a tank.

Post 757306 by Ettienne on 2015-01-25 10:10:05

Hi lee dates have been confirmed a while. The 14th at Volvo and most flying out the 13th from stanstead for £60 return. Driving there are a few on voc and here. I'm trying to shut the offer end of the month, as it's a headache changing with the factory. Would you like me to send paypal details for the driving experience.

Post 781454 by oblark on 2015-08-12 17:51:26

Just spoke to steve, The flight back WAS at 19:30 on wednesday the 14th but ryan air has CANCELLED this flight. So we are now flying back at 17:30 on wednesday the 14th. As tuesday the 13th was a bit of a "hang around gburg" day Steve has decided to do the museum tour on the tuesday, the plan at the moment is to go straight from the airport to the museum, then check into our hotels, then go around gburg for an evening meal. Then Wednesday morning do the factory tour, have lunch at the factory then go to airport to catch the 17:30 flight home.

Post 781467 by Ettienne on 2015-08-12 19:28:59

As above (thanks Oblark) should be eating at the factory around 1pm so should easily be able to get to landvetta for 3.30pm and hang about until flight. Not much I can do about Ryanair unfortunately, but should all be good still and possibly better

Post 781468 by Ettienne on 2015-08-12 19:35:15

Our party will be hiring a car, it may be something others want to do as it will work very cheap in comparison to taxi fares. There is a bus to town from the airport or with numbers it may be better to share a taxi. Does everybody have an idea as to there forward journey from the airport? How many are flying into landvetter? So we can look at options. My group 5 people. Troublemaker 3 people. Flying moose 1

Ok so I've recieved an email this afternoon. It is not good news, the blue train around the factory is cancelled as they have a new model in the factory and it's security / secrecy issues The rest of the day, brand experience, lunch and driving is as planned. The Volvo chap Bo (I rang him) is able to put on pastries and tea / coffee free and possibly offer a conference room with a Volvo documentary / film if he is able to show it, I think he means equipment issues. He is suggesting breakfast 9-9.45 Additionally he said it may be possible to get to the driving experience 15 mins earlier for extra time. Breakfast is agreed and I'll try for the extra 15 mins and Volvo film and post up a new itinerary, obviously I share everyone's disappointment. Pic of the email attached.

if you end up with a few hours to kill chaps, get over to the aeroseum. http://www.aeroseum.se/ It's just down the road from the factory (10mins drive tops), and is a disused underground nuclearproof hangar system, stuffed full of Swedish military aircraft, many of which you can sit in (sad, but an unusual treat I found).
