Power upgrades for a '93 850 T5 manual

Hi fellas. This must surely be a question that you're bored of by now however, what can I do to get the most power from a T5 on a budget. I've just bought it as a cheap hack for smoking round in and would love to get more power from it. I currently own a few other cars which soak up most of my disposable income so can't afford forged internals and monster turbos. Thanks in advance Ross

remap, injectors, bleed valve, downpipe... brown trousers...

Forget the bleed valve they have the softest rods going on an obd1. I had an identical car 93 L reg.

Maybe remove / change for the later exhaust housing as it's conical and the smallest of the lot. Could de cat at the same time

theres nothing wrong with manual boost control, as long as its set up right and not played with.

Post 735061 by Ettienne on 2014-09-13 12:44:34

The engine bent a rod at 82k after I sold it, with an mbc on, for a new owner I don't think its worth the risk. Have a look at oblarks build thread the technical update is in it saying about the updated rods, that and th fact the earlier cars were 304 maps 16psi and later cars 310 18psi, due it the turbo and rods.

Ok so we're looking at the usual breathing suspects plus a bit more boost and a remap. Why are we saying no to a bleed valve? Is it boost spike? I could always just adjust the actuator arm to reach my desired boost level couldn't i? As for remaps, who is recommended? Ideally in the north and someone that can provide the most power for the least outlay. Thanks again Ross

Just look for a 2nd hand re mapped ECU and check its compatible first, hlm, rica or mte are usual maps will make around 16 psi

As far as I'm aware, the 304 is all 850's and the 310 is V70 P1.

Post 735125 by jamesy12345 on 2014-09-13 19:31:22

Hello Ross, I think you are on the Turbo Renault forum, I'm on there also Budget mods would be a remap & cat back! Possibly white injectors but that would depend on the advice from whoever is doing the map
As far as I'm aware, the 304 is all 850's and the 310 is V70 P1.
No 310 was introduced for the 850r manual with improved rods and 16t

Post 735128 by slammed 66 on 2014-09-13 19:35:34

Can anyone shed a little light as to what power and more importantly, torque figures I could expect to see with the exhaust, air filter and remap please?

Post 735129 by p fandango on 2014-09-13 19:35:52
No 310 was introduced for the 850r manual with improved rods and 16t
but i thought you said OBD1 cars had the weaker rods, so why can't the 310 be used in OBD2 non R's if your "theory" of uprated rods is right

Post 735130 by Ettienne on 2014-09-13 19:36:43

http://www.rica.nl/chiptuning.php The 225-240 850's are 304 850r 16t 310
Hello Ross, I think you are on the Turbo Renault forum, I'm on there also
Hey james, that'll be right buddy. I'm a diehard RTOC man but I have an account on the other forum for the sake of it. Nice to see another renault fan :B_steerin
but i thought you said OBD1 cars had the weaker rods, so why can't the 310 be used in OBD2 non R's if your "theory" of uprated rods is right
Show me where I said you can't use it? I said it was designed for the 850r, with its different turbo and improved rods. Fact there is a link to Volvo technical update with info on rod improvement, also rica lists 2 maps for the 850, 304 or 310 It's not don't to me what people put in there cars if they don't do the research, also the cars have different injectors. Tell me why they do this then.
Can anyone shed a little light as to what power and more importantly, torque figures I could expect to see with the exhaust, air filter and remap please?
Numbers I got from Jan Woth & TME about 257 hp with remap only 270 hp & 400 Nm with cat back full exhaust (inc 2.75" downpipe & 100 cell cat) about 285 hp & 430 Nm The above is with a 16T turbo & M4.4. management system, M4.3 won't be far away from that Huge numbers compared to the world of Renault 5's but we are dragging around an extra 500kg here

Post 735140 by theflyingbrick on 2014-09-13 20:12:32

anyways to the op............my advice would be give it a service (stage 0) then get in contact with hlm in bromsgrove and get a map at the cost of 150 quid with that youll see around 250 bhp and about the same torque.........then once your bored you can get white injectors, decat, catback and a decent filter which the hlm map is more than capable or running and once your bored with that get a 16t which again the hlm is more than capable of running.....with that little lot youll see between 270/280 bhp then beyond that its a case of how much do you wanna spend ;)

Be careful with the boost. I've killed one with a dodgy bcs so NBC are bad. To many people have bent rods with wot below 3500 rpm
