I thought that the ETM shenanigans experience recently, was part and parcel of having a stupid big turbo and various other none-standard bits on my engine. I actually believe its now the ETM itself. So which is better - 2nd hand http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLVO-S60-S80-V70-S70-C70-THROTTLE-BODY-ELECTRONIC-THROTTLE-MODULE-P-Nr-8644347-/281388367779?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item41840dbfa3 refurb?? - If so which firm? Or brand new?

Get it refurbed with a 2 years warranty

Post 725899 by M-R-P on 2014-07-25 06:13:51

If it's not Bosch then new or refurbed mate.

No its the italian job - Magnetti Marelli a la conchille pomodoro - but can't complain after it has gone this long. It was replaced under warranty 7 years ago, when I first bought Betsy!

Shame. The Bosch ones either work or they don't - no buggering about for a month stalling etc. And they're plug n play too, as I found out a few months back... Is having an S60R throttle bragging rights? as long as nobody you're bragging to knows that it's the same throttle as a T5 one, I spose it is lol.

imo you cannot fit a second hand part. because it is coded by software when replaced, a secondhand part would work initially because it is coded to the previous car but as soon as you try to do any download or upgrade to any unit on the network, it will mismatch and cause all sorts of problems. if you had discarded the old part it that instance, you would be in big trouble. the way to get out of it is to refit the old part, and perform the smallest piece of software download. if have never looked in detail at the refurb ones - do the company wipe them somehow so you can code them in? the problem of the 'mismatch' is the part serial number and part number of each module is checked against the car file before it actually starts the download itself. if your car never ever goes back to Volvo needing a download you'll be ok, but you cant guarantee that especially if you owned a p2 where it even includes door switches. hope this helps to know if you didn't already dave .

Refurbing the old one retains the pcb but converts the potentiometer to a contactless version. Negating the need for a recode.

I think then I will throw it upto these people http://volvodiagnostic.com/shop/index.php?id_product=18&controller=product

Dave ignore this wrong information, if you want to use a second hand unit you can with no issues, just make sure its off a turbo model and same year car as yours. Im assuming yours is the white sticker model?? If so once you have fitted the second hand ETM take your car to Volvo to get the 50p software upgrade for the wider peramiters (delaying the problem). Will also cost you half hours labour. Alternatively go onto VOC and contact a guy called SPOZNIK he will rebuild yours with contactless potentiometeres for under £140, i personally wouldnt use the more expensive companies as they do exactly the same as this guy.

I thought Spoznik was Volvodiagnostic?

Post 725952 by JamesT5 on 2014-07-25 14:29:18

Personally Dave, I'd get a second hand unit and put it on. They don't need a re-code because I've tried different ETM's on my T5 off other T5's and it ran fine.
I thought Spoznik was Volvodiagnostic?
Me too - that's why I've already paid for it, so it's a done deal now. Going for the contactless Pot solution for peace of mind.

Took the old spic ETM off last night and sent it this morning to Volvo Diagnostic.
Took the old spic ETM off last night and sent it this morning to Volvo Diagnostic.
Is it much of a job to take it off, my Sept 99 V70 petrol auto (140 none turbo) is exhibiting all the signs described on the company's website. I don't want to pay my local garage a diagnostic fee if I can do it myself.

This is pretty easy to get at, you'll need to take the inlet pipe off the throttle and you're there.

It is just 4 bolts, the intercooler pipework jubilee and 1 electrical connector. Mine has RIP pipework fitted - on OEM you'll have to remove the MAP & temp sensors from the stock pipe and disconnect it from the FMIC and the main intake into the ETM itself. As Martin said yours should not be too hard. Bolts hang upside down on the T5 & the electrical connector sits on a metal plate where the main loom transverses the front spar of the subframe. (quite close to the starter motor).

It's stupid that the cost is really nominal, it's the labour to do it. I'm going to have a software upgrade on my ETM, assuming it's not faulty. Have you had this or know anyone who has? What difference does it make to the performance/behavior of the car?
