Traded in the merc and upgraded! Audi A8 4.2 V8 diesel. Excuse the state of it had done 300 miles on greasy / salty roads! Will get some proper pics after a nice wash! Image Image Image Image Image Fully specced sport model. So digital TV / radio, adjustable air ride and mmi center. Heated memory electric leather etc. Overall, smiles all round!

Love it. Looked in to these a while ago as a potential future purchase a few years down the line. Only thing that scares me is the potential costs if anything goes wrong. Out of interest, have you taken out any kind of warranty on it?

Post 676606 by Palmer on 2014-01-02 08:39:08

I havent mate no, but tbh that sort of stuff never scares me as i have a good friend who runs his own garage and is always a diamond when it comes to things like that! ;)

Nice, real mile muncher that, you can cross continents in those and get out feeling fresh as a daisy.

I had the D2 A8 4.2 petrol, lovely car. Image Image Image Image Image I'm a massive fan of the A8/S8 (of all ages) just wish one would fit in my garage.

Post 676615 by lance on 2014-01-02 10:48:06

Very nice what sort of mpg does the 4.2 tdi do?

Post 676616 by M-R-P on 2014-01-02 11:12:18

Isnt that the V8 diesel Clarkson did Reading to scotland and back on one tank in?

Post 676636 by Palmer on 2014-01-02 12:30:00

Yeah they are an absolute massive car. That petrol one looks niiiice :-D I think it was the 4.0 diesel clarkson did that in. A heavier less economical less powerful version than the newer 4.2 both twin turbo though. at best 35/36. At worst when cold 12 until its warm then around 20 round town

Post 676637 by y2blade on 2014-01-02 12:36:57

Post 676642 by Gold 'N' Brown on 2014-01-02 12:49:54

Yeah, the 4.2s aren't great for economy, but what can you expect for any high output engine? Still better than an equivilant petrol (in most cases). I asked a guy on Youtube who had put up a detailed 3 part review of his 3.0 diesel what sort of economy he was seeing, and he said average 28 around town. He lives in London though, so his version of "in town" is going to be much worse than most other people's! I still reckon the cost of fuel is much less of a worry than the potential cost of servicing and maintenance when things start going wrong. It's a modern car full of electrics, they all go wrong at some stage :duck: But then that's why such expensive premium vehicles drop to a price that's affordable by the rest of us mere mortals after a few years.

Lovely car mate.Going posh are you?

Post 676705 by Palmer on 2014-01-02 16:58:27

I was debating a 3.0 but they werent far off each other with economy so i thought i might as well go all out. Im finding it a brilliant compromise. Always wanted a V8 but dreaded the fuel bills. Its got an awesome rumble (even with 2 cats and a dpf) and the pickup is awesome, even when you just partially tap the throttle. Ive looked at remaps already, your looking at just over 400bhp and 630 ft lb. God knows whar a custom map would produce! Also, first ever 4wd car. Quattro is awesome. We have a steep gravelled driveway and every car ive had roughs up the stones to get out, but this doesnt :) Ive not really pushed her if im honest though, as i said first 4wd car and i still think the back ends gonna swing out, i know it wont but its hard to get that thought out of your mind. besides i dont wanna replace the 19'' run flats any time soon either!!!

It was my main deciding factor with the S4, I wanted fast and reliable with a strong AWD system....nothing else comes close imho otherwise I'd have bought something else.

As far as comfort is concerned, even with the choice of three suspension settings I don't personally think it as much more comfortable that my V70 daily runner or my old 850GLT T5. As far as costs are concerned when I got it I knew it needed discs and pads all around but wasn't quite prepared for the £1400 bill. In fact if anyone fancies a very nice example make me an offer I only did 2500 miles in it last year. Sorry about the highjack.
I've always wanted a toureg v10 tdi and remapped they are surposed to be bonkers lol
The v10 tdi is a pointless engine, its extremely heavy and its hugely expensive to fix when it goes wrong. The 4.2 v8 is better in every way, lighter, more efficient, more power and cheaper to fix.

Where did you get your discs / pads from?! New bosch discs on euros are £42 each! £30 for a set of bosch pads too.

Looks like it has Merc's Titan wheels on :) very nice mate, I owned a 2004 A6 diesel for while....just FWD but I was impressed with the handlding & grip.

Post 680367 by Palmer on 2014-01-14 20:50:30

They are the bbs option for the car im lead to believe, I still cant believe they are 19's. The car dwarfs them! Im impressed so far with the handling. But tbf im not really pushing the car - it cost me too much to throw into a bush! I've had the odd blast and it made me cringe. Where a RWD would normally let go (speeds and cornering angle not mentioned) it just "jumps" back into line it felt so weird!

The "problem" is that because it insulates you from the outside world so well you very quickly end up carrying pretty high speeds without really knowing it, until the gentleman in the Rover 25 with the tweed cap decides to turn into the turn that he has just passed.

Really getting back into detailing now. Its a task getting a car this big clean! I mainly use autoglym products, apart from Harley wax. Nicely polished and waxed in the pics. Need some snow foam in my life though. Also ive noticed about 6/7 chips / scratches that have appeared and one feck off scuff on the rear bumper that I polished out but its still visible. Needless to say I park at the end of the car park at work so no one is near it now. Just me and a Nissan GTR use the far end :D Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image

Post 723922 by Palmer on 2014-07-13 00:07:44

Few updates. Zimmermann drilled discs and ate pads. Image Image Image In all honesty ive been having a major brake squeal issue, which prompted me to get new discs and pads on the front. It was a weird one, the squeak is when driving without the brakes applied, and only happen after driving for a while, and the more I drive the louder it got. Alters pitch / consistency with steering angle too. When doing the discs, euro car parts ****ed up and gave me the wrong pads (turns out Passat pads don't fit an A8 funnily enough!!) so I had to whack the old pads on for a few days till the new ones came in (no stock carried.) The squeaking then got worse, a lot worse. Pads arrived today so I took it to the garage asap. Old pads came off and they were MELTED!! I was like "LOL" The ramp I filed on them the other day was completely FLAT! So we did a full investigation and stripped both calipers and greased everything up that should move etc then put the new pads in. Was told to go easy on them - although I don't think I do go hard on them to be fair, but then again they are so well built you can sometimes forget your still doing 70 at the 100 yard mark LOL! Anyway the issue seems to have fecked off, no more squeaking, got knows what pads were on the car, but they had no make on the back which is always a bad sign!
