Hydroprinting rub strips?

Just wondering if anyone has had this done to their ageing faded black rub strips? Wouldn't it permanently solve the eternal problem of having to repeatedly black them up? A very dark subtle carbon print or just black. Or would the texture make it look naff? Have plenty else to spend my money on for now so just asking what thoughts are.
id colour code them if was mine or get them painted satin black
Had thought about replacing with colour coded volvo parts but it means changing the rear bumper I think as the parts are different. I'd probably go for black/carbon. Have heard bad stories about the results when the strips are painted. Worried it would look naff with the rough texture.
have you used this i did all the greys on mine with it http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plasticare-Trim-Dye-BLACK-Plastic-Rubber-Bumper-Paint-/251367462912?pt=UK_Car_Accessories_Car_Care_Cleaning&hash=item3a86ab1800#ht_1617wt_1301
Cheers. I have tries a few things. MRPs advice was to use the same cloth after applying Meguiars tyre gel any hat seemed to do a fairly good job. None are permanent though. Was thinking this way might achieve a good result, look better than painting and be a permanent fix.

Worried it would look naff with the rough texture. ive colour coded a few black strips on other cars. just got to use the right primmers. i applied plastic or etch primmer then filler primer the textured effect is gone. best doint it on spare strips though. you could get the black bits in rear bumper colour coded or am i getting wires crossed

You have to spray a base coat onto the plastics before dipping anyway.

Post 657206 by Squirtydog on 2013-10-30 23:18:21

...so I either case the textured finish should be lost? The issue I thought with the rear bumper is that it is a different pattern/design of inlay on the facelift models which came with body coloured rub strips. I assumed therefore that you cannot just buy body coloured replacements in the pre facelift models. i.e. This pre facelift Vs. this post facelift ...the strip down the rear wing does not connect with the boot lip. But then I've just found this So who knows. Volvokid could you post a photo of your rear please?
it dose look nice on the last pic
I might agree. May be better to stay black as they were meant to be.

Post 657210 by Squirtydog on 2013-10-30 23:36:29

Like it but a bit torn. Don't want the car to look like a 'pretender'. Looking like a facelift when it isn't.

Post 657211 by Squirtydog on 2013-10-30 23:40:14

If you've done this work before then we may have more to do when I visit next year:rolleyes: This car is in danger of becoming the obsession my 944 was.

Post 657212 by Biff on 2013-10-30 23:41:06

I'd be tempted to spray with high build primer if you were to "dip" them mate, think with the texture & a pattern it may look a bit naff.

Post 657213 by Squirtydog on 2013-10-30 23:43:46
I'd be tempted to spray with high build primer if you were to "dip" them mate, think with the texture & a pattern it may look a bit naff.
Agree. Only an option if the texture is lost.

Post 657215 by Biff on 2013-10-30 23:48:45
Agree. Only an option if the texture is lost.
Like you said if you colour code it will look facelift. How about a nice gloss anthracite with matching wheels? I find the dipping may go out of fashion then you will end up painting them anyway. Lol Stephenevans99 's engine bay does look fabulous but can't help thinking if it were on the outside & looking at it all the time you couldn't help wishing it was real.

Someone at Trax had a Volvo with carbon strips just like you want.... Hmmmmm, it looked ok I guess but like Biff says what if and when it goes out of fashion? I'm having the same dilemma at the moment wondering weather to get my roof rails dipped along with other outside parts.... just worried in 2yrs it will look old hat. I would go for a nice black finish, or the white Volvo looks really nice... at the end of the day go with your gut feeling as it's you that has to be happy with it :)

Post 657218 by Squirtydog on 2013-10-31 00:14:05

If I could get a proper colour match and texture gone then I'd be tempted. Re the carbon, I guess I agree really thinking about it. Fake carbon all over the outside could really feel fake. Anyway, other things to spend money on first. When it comes to roof rails. I keep thinking about removing them altogether and getting replacement strips but they're £160!

When my dad had his 850 T5 volvo did his strips and it looked awful with the texture. He took it back and they smoothed it down and did it again, that was done back in 99ish and it still looked perfect when he sold it years later. The car belongs to a member on here now

Took a while for a good finish but was really worth it.

get it all coded! freshen it up abit... if your not keen on ur bumper get a fl one ...

Post 657250 by Squirtydog on 2013-10-31 09:37:05

Thanks for that. If I was painting them then I'd be paying for someone to do it as I just don't have the time or the skills. With the labour involved buying new replacements might be easier. Just leaves the rear bumper as the problem. I do have a scuff on mine and a small area where the clear coat is peeling so it is on the list of touch ups anyway. May be worth finding a facelift one in flash green... As you say iancho... Many ideas ahead of myself. This was meant to be a curious question. Maybe find a quick not too expensive way of sorting the ageing rub strips. Now becoming a large job and rear bumper swap on the list of to dos:slap: Problem then is the black plastic sill covers and lower section of the doors... I'd obviously have to get a front splitter and have it painted up too....Major money haemorrhage beginning. Cue ensuing:argue: if I suggest this idea to the management.

Will be enough to do every bit of plastic trim on the car. Will retain the texture for an OE look whilst making everything nice and black and even. And it lasts (it's a dye, not a treatment that needs constant re-application). If you wanted something more charcoal than black you can buy 1 x Black and 1 x Grey and mix them until you get a suitable shade you like. Alternatively you can try Gtechniq C4, which is more expensive but gives good OE results too. Doesn't dye the trim but adds a long lasting coating and provides a sort of sheen, bringing the plastic back to what it would have looked like when brand new.

Only that i have tried so many different products over the years on various recommendations and none has given a half permanent result. If this one is different then maybe i'll give it a go. Not much to lose for a tenner.

It does look like its going to last a while as last time I gave it a wash it came up like new again.

Post 657304 by M-R-P on 2013-10-31 17:40:45

Just to add my cheapass bit... The trims are really easy to take off, even the rear ones. I've recently had mine off and after a quick clean with petrol, I gave them a quick (and I do mean quick) flash over with some satin black and they look like new now :) Image Image

I've recently had mine off and after a quick clean with petrol, I gave them a quick (and I do mean quick) flash over with some satin black and they look like new now :)
Having seen (and experienced) the downsides of painting textured plastics it's worth pointing out that it's something you really need to be committed to, and it needs to be done properly. The problem is that the paint doesn't adhere well enough (if badly done) to last, and will flake, but tends to adhere to the low points of the texture making it difficult to shift without abrasion. So over time, when the paint has flaked off in places and looks worse than it did when they were just plain old faded trims, you find you can't actually remove all remaining traces, which then limits your options. Using abrasives to help shift the paint damages the texture. So you then might as well flatten right back and go for a smooth painted finish. I'm only saying this as I'd like to shoot the person who painted the trims on my GTI years ago, which now look bloody awful and can't be restored to an OE look.
Did you need to clean other products off first? Any primer?
Always clean thoroughly, otherwise products won't adhere properly, or in extreme cases could chemically react. Use panel wipe/IPA (Isopropylalchohol) for the final cleaning step to make sure you've got rid of grease, silicone etc. Happy to be proven wrong, and it sounds like Iancho has the experience to do that, but I wouldn't trust a jet wash near my trims if they'd just been flashed over with some plastic paint. But then I am a cynical ££££
