Hi everyone,
I suspect my clutch is slipping & need some advice.
The car is a 2002 2.4L D5 V70 with a stage 2 RICA upgrade:
Power 163 hp @ 3900 rpm --> 210 hp @ 4050 rpm (+ 47 hp)
Torque 340 Nm @ 2250 rpm --> 460 Nm @ 2130 rpm (+120 Nm)
I get an over revving from about 2-3000rpm where the revs jump up but not the speed that goes with it, then the car seems to 'catch-up' with itself. If I drive carefully around this rev range it's ok but sometimes I need that bit more acceleration & the over revving occurs.
I've seen a DriveTorque Stage 3 Clutch Kit from Lark Speed but would like to know if anyone else has used this before in their car or heard good/bad things about it?
I dont really want to take the RICA off but if the clutch cant handle the 25% increase in torque & bhp then I might have to.
Also now the clutch has been slipping if I take the RICA off will it continue to slip due to glazing /wear etc?
Cheers

With any clutch that starts to slip it will only get worse ,the more it slips , heat will damage the plate and the DMF much quicker.
Just drive like your grandad until you have the funds for new kit.

Granddaddy driving it is then? ;) Do you know anything about that kit or know of any other uprated ones that fit the V70?

When you look at getting it done you will need to change the plate,pressure plate,flywheel DMF,concentric slave.
On my s60 d5 used LUK parts but it was a stock car.

Not heard of this clutch before, sort of looks similar to the Spec Stage 3 clutch. (I've got a Spec Stage 3+ clutch and its pretty strong but the pedal is pretty heavy).
Just wondering if an S60R clutch would be suitable for your car?

Is there any way to find out the clamping force or what the rated torque is for each clutch V70, S60R etc?

Not sure on where to look for clamping force or how to compare the clamping force of clutches but a standard S60R has around 300bhp and 400NM ish of torque which is why I wondered if it would be a suitable alternative for you. (The standard S60R clutch on mine seemed ok when the car was standard, only started to go through them as the power increased).

you wont get a s60r clutch to slip in a diesel. becarful if your planing on mismatching clutches and flywheels. i was warned by tim willams not to.

Hi, this is my experience with the same car with the same map, take it or leave it, you have been warned :)
I had this issue:
This was fixed by fitting one of these from CG Motorsport:
Sorted!
Clutch didn't slip but after 40K I'd had enough! It was like a switch, reversing was a nightmare. Pulling away or any work in traffic was horrible, juddering on take up etc. I was told by Tim Williams that this clutch would be better on my slightly modified 855 T5 and the S60R clutch that was going to go on the T5 would be better on the D5. So I'm now running a second hand P2 T5 DMF (the second DMF on my car was knackered after the paddle clutch) with an S60R clutch and I should never have gone with an uprated clutch on a D5 daily driver.
I also run a milder RICA map as I learnt that modding a D5 is a pastime for people with pockets deeper than myself. I just spend the money on my T5. Adam at RICA should be able to help you with this.
I managed just short of 210 bhp with the first cat removed and water/methanol injection so please don't believe you car is making the claimed power.
Best of luck (buy a T5) lol

Well that's sorted that one out ,say no more.

Check your gearbox for leaks, I had clutch slip on my first car (a Rover) in the late 90's, it turned out the gearbox was leaking fluid on to the clutch plates.

I'm pretty sure there are no leaks anywhere.
Redbrick - Sorry but I couldn't see any issues with the revs in your vid, I'll have to take one of my own to show what I mean is happening. Also what part was that you ordered from CG Motorsport? Was that a Stage 3 clutch kit?
I'll ask my mate about fitting the S60R clutch as he's a mechanic (for Volvo too ;) ) to see what his opinion would be on whether it will fix the problem.

Here is a quick vid of whats happening. You can see the revs jump up while the speed stays smooth. If in 5th going 60mph it shows up worse & if you engage the cruise control when it tries to get back up to the speed you were at then the revs go up, drop back & the cruise control disengages itself.
