Read alot about tuning the s60r / v70r and all seems not to dwell on uprating the bottom ends, even when putting out say 400-ish bhp Are they uprated? I only ask as i have seen a very good engine on ebay with 48k and full history and mot's to prove mileage. Is it worth buying it?

The most talked issue with the R engine is the bores splitting when running 350+ bhp. Afaik the bottom end is pretty tough on all the 5 cyl. lumps. Not sure if the rods are uprated to cope with the extra oomph.

I had read that the bottoms were uprated, but as always can never remember where lol

I can't say for sure either but I know of the engine you're looking at. If you're looking to spend money on big power from an R lump, this will be a good starting point.

I already have an s60r, but was thinking mine is much higher mileage, so a nice 50k engine would be nice and sweet for tuning, barely run in at that mileage.

for tuning you're better off sticking a 2007 2.4 t5 engine in and binning the 2.5

I was more wondering if the bottom end is uprated then possibly using a 2.4 top end? or getting the bores shimmed. But there are many options

I could do with finding that thread about it. thanks any how.
its not uprated, the focus rs ones are though
Really? I thought they just cobalt lined the bores and modified the head?
which to me is uprated
Agreed but we're talking bottom-ends, are we not? ;)
Agreed but we're talking bottom-ends, are we not? ;)
bores are in the bottom end lol, since we keep going on about bottom ends here is a nice one...... Image

Post 548731 by Lsvolvo1 on 2012-11-18 19:35:43

Lost me guys, so if the head is uprated and say the bottom end is (just say). Then would it not be possible to have s60r bottom end, 2.4 barrels and s60r head?
bores are in the bottom end lol, since we keep going on about bottom ends here is a nice one...... MattM's car is a 2.4 T5 and has 324bhp from just a remap.

The r 2.5 bottoms ends are forged rods and pistons .and the reason they split the bores is because people are running small turbos too hard and not using a decend fmic and heating the intake temps too much. I know that the rods and pistons are forged because used them in my 2435cc v70 lpt

Post 548795 by Lsvolvo1 on 2012-11-18 22:58:46

Thanks smithy, i did go looking for the thread this evening and found one about a chap running 430bhp and using standard bottom end, which would lead to think its very tough at least.

IMHO 2 routes are available to create a bullet proof bottom end - Use a 2.4 & then invest a grand on forged pistons/rods or 2.5 and put in dalton liners.

Post 549220 by MattM on 2012-11-21 11:27:19

How do you even get 400bhp from these engines?! :O new turbo, injectors, exhaust and map?

So trying to avoid the costs as the engine forsale on ebay is very low mileage and i have a broken 2.4 sitting about
How do you even get 400bhp from these engines?! :O new turbo, injectors, exhaust and map?
If you have a look on swedespeed a few threads on there, i think iirc a guy was using, 550 or 650cc injectors, k16 (altered), head work, custom map, fmic and exhaust etc. His i think was still 2.5.

Post 549224 by Lsvolvo1 on 2012-11-21 11:43:37

This isn;t the one i was thinking of but, its a modded c30 running 12.8 / 110mph quarter mile. So its a bit nippy lol, its not using a k16 but if i find the link i'll post it up Its running 405bhp http://www.atpturbo.com/root/download/atpturbo_volvo30t5_drag.wmv

So trying to avoid the costs as the engine forsale on ebay is very low mileage and i have a broken 2.4 sitting about
I would put no faith in the declared mileage either as an accurate statement or a measure of condition. If you are fitting pistons one would hope that you are going for slight oversize & hence the re-bore will make them as good as new. I would look to interchange as a whole engine TBH - as there is no time saving switching the heads. Both run ME9 management - so you should be good to go. However I would be very surprised if the heads were not completely interchangeable.

Running 400 bhp will be opening a can of worms. Mashed 4wd and dmf will get hammered. You need a bigger turbo to

Post 549262 by Lsvolvo1 on 2012-11-21 17:07:15

I wasn't looking to mod to 400 bhp, i was just trying to build a reasonably tough engine cheaply with not too much hassle

Post 549286 by Wobbly Dave on 2012-11-21 19:36:31

A 2.4L direct swap would be the answer then. You can easily run 320 bhp on the 2.4 with the standard internals on just a remap alone. 340 would not be unreasonable with a few other bolt-ons.

Post 549416 by graemewelch on 2012-11-22 12:02:47

As dave says. The 2.4 is the best lump.

Post 549424 by MattM on 2012-11-22 12:24:02

I agree ;)
