Ok, got a bit bored today so went and test drove a couple of cars that you guys might be ineterested in......S60r and Monaro!!
Right, S60r first....
A Silver job with the Orange interior and up at £28k so it was never going to be "the one"... anyway, it was clearly very "tight" as it had only 127 miles on the clock. Went for a blast and it was.......well.....OK. Not amazing or mind blowing, just OK. It felt as if it would have a slight edge on mine but not much, so I was a bit disappointed. Again, perhaps when they loosen up things change but it would have to loosen up a whole lot to make much of a difference.
SO onto the Monaro....beautiful blue colour, looked stunning, yet understated ( perhaps even a little bland ). Anyway, drove down a busy A road and it was very well mannered, then hit a dual carridgeway and floored it. Not neck snapping performence but very linear "thrust", pulling from 1500 rpm all the way round to the red line. Agian, a bit quicker than mine, but not much....but oh, the sound track....V8 sounded ace. Although seemed to run out of revs just as it was sounding so good, so its a limited treat.
Mrs M - if you haven't been in one yet, I think you would be pleased as it does live up to what you would expect. Big, heavy, slightly agricultural but terrific noise and goes really well.
The downside for me is the fact that there are only 2 seats in the back ( I need 3 ) and mpg.....wait for it.....18ish!! Ouch!
So where does this leave me ? Well I think I will rule out both the Monaro and S60r...so start looking at Audi S6...
Its just made me realise how good a V70 riced is !
Dave - don't know if you want to comment on the S60r bit as I know how much you love yours...

That V8 fix ? Oh, you mean the car! I was temporarily flattered then!!
You know when you really like something ( I'm talking about cars again, ) sometimes they don't live up to expectations ? I think you would like the Monaro...I was quite impressed...but I could give it a run for its money in my v70...

eh, of course!
i take it was a 05 model?, they are slightly heavier than my 2004 model, and has a more linear ecu software revison.
and anycar at 100miles clocked, is going to be tighter than a nuns ****
if you have rica on your t5 at present, the s60r aint going to be any faster, should be slightly slower, so if your thinking "It felt as if it would have a slight edge on mine but not much", then thats pretty good!
did u take the car to some twistys?, did u play with the 4c?, did u have a sellsman with u?(if yes, then its allways hard to give the car a really good run, u know wot i mean!), how much revs did u give it in each gear?
did hear the pop from the exhaust?(if not, u werent driving it hard enough to get best from the car! :))
u could chip ecu and get 30+bhp and the same in torque, few other mods, more power, which would then make it faster than your present ride
also cos the s60r doesnt spin its wheels all the way to 60, like your rica ride, u get a feeling its not as fast.
come on, i know your going to make the right decision!
dave
ps- mpg on the s60r would easyly beat the v8, i get about 25+mpg average, the more motorway the better, i will get about 28mpg+ on motorway runs, got 30 last week!, fraz will confirm the 28mpg fig!

LMSO!! Yeah sorry Hun I was referring to the car (on this occasion ;))
It doesn't have to be "quicker" than a RICA'd T5 - but it has to have the wow factor for the drive - I take it there are no clever technical things that do all the work for you in the Monaro?

Yeah, it did have the wow factor.I little intimidating as I didn't really know its limits and I wound it up to around 110 so I was a little reserved. But yeah, I think you would love it.

It was being a bit generous cos it didn't feel as quick as mine but you know its difficult to tell. I blasted around a couple of roundabouts enough to spin the wheels and get the 4wd going, but again I would have to have REALLY pushed it to notice a difference.
Exhaust pop - Don't think so, and I couldn't have driven it much harder - the salesman didn't say a word. I bounced off the rev limiter a few times but didn't hear a pop...
I'm not being critical of the S60r, I just expected a bit more. But as I said, I think its cos i'm judging it against my current car, which I do love...
I also know the MPG would be far better...so I believe you on that score.

S60 R will always feel slower than a moded V70 mainly due to the fact its so much quieter inside!
It will corner faster than the V70 all day long and thats in the dry, try switching the DSTC off and do a doughnut will impress people, cant do that with a salesman in the car unless of course your the salesman :B_steerin

Anyway isnt the S6 a V8 if I can remember? So your back to the terrible MPG and have you driven an audi recently, so so dull, cant feel anything from the steering wheel or pedals just dont feel like your driving one!
Other option get a seat put in the boot of the Monaro! No one will know.

how did u come that conclusion?
doughnuts, got a video of a s60r doing that off the net, very cool!, which branch do u work at again, cos i aint buying a car from there, lol

If a car is quieter and smoother it always feels more shielded or sheltered to the speed that its actually doing, not that a 70 is noisy but theirs more wind noise and more of a sense of speed than in an S60 or S60 R, if you watch the speedo though you do get to notice the true speed of the things!

I was a little more scientific - I drove the same peice of road, gunned it to see what speed I could effectively hit at a certain point. Also, I had the window open the whole time to hear what it sounded like. I also noticed very little difference in road and wind noise..( and yes, with the window up!)
Yeah, even with the seat in the boot the Monaro was good but no convincing.
Just been doing some research on the S6, which I though was turbo'ed....but no, its 4.2 V8. 340 BHP but very heavy and probably slower than a T5...also very expensive to mod and depreciate fast. Jumped on a forum and most people said avoid....oh well!
Its looking more like a Skyline as a toy then...unless I succumb to Murphy and Adam and go deisel!!
Post 43498 by aeroresh on 2005-09-15 18:17:01
I had an V8 S6 Avant for 3 years and no its not slower than a T5 by a long shot! Adam at VT remarked that it was 10 mph quicker at some defined point on his standard benchmark route than a Stage 1 (310 bhp I presume) modded T5.
The only down side is the fuel costs. Depreciation isnt that bad on a used one. I had people fighting over mine when I came to sell it due to its rarity value!

Oh, that's a bit more encouraging...would you suggest having a look at one then ? What were the fuel costs realistically ??
