Noticed it advertised on the web took a trip up to a car lot that sells ex police cars. Firstly good god what an engine.... just seemed to keep pulling and pulling, no nasty rattles or bangs that I could hear on the short test run. No diving pulling under braking or acceleration. Had a good look around it and a squint at the service history, and all looked pretty good, all panels are the same colour and shade of blue no signs of any accident damage chassis legs etc, front subframe was good no dents or gouges. 4 good tyres brake pads etc. Now for the bit that I'm stuck on the guy said that he would get the holes and missing bits of the interior sorted which i wasn't too bothered about, there were a few marks inside on the plastics in the back but a trip to the scrap yard will sort that. All the wheels were tatty, peeling lacquer (not a fault of anyone) and the odd curb mark, but the body seemed to have a few scratches some of which were quite deep and noticeable and 2 holes which have been plugged with screws on the nsf door pillar (front pillar), and what I would call a shopping trolley dent. I wasn't expecting a mint unmarked car but is this about the standard of ex police vehicles or do they vary greatly? This was an unmarked/undercover car so there are no marks where the stickers would have been. I don't know weather it's worth putting a mop over the body and either buy second hand or have the alloys repaired. Unless I work out what would be needed to get it up to scratch take this off the price, or leave it and keep an eye out for more as this is the first one I have seen. Only problem with that is they seem to be miles away from me and the other problem is that I still havn't shifted my current car and thanks to the government I can't just switch the insurance over and advertise it on the drive. :wallbash: Regards John Added - It was a 2006/56 plate

Sounds a bit better than the average ex-plod car! If you are looking for a tidy car, I'd suggest a privately-owned vehicle. Ex-police cars really are luck-of-the-draw. They've all had a hard life! On the other hand, if the price is right and you don't mind doing some work on it yourself over the coming years, it might suit you well. I'm sure there'll be some more input to come from others on here :)

I'm not bothered about doing a bit of work, it was more weather it was worth trying to get it nice, plus the costs involved with doing it. I think it was up for just under 4.5k 119 on the clock and having a major service biannually and cambelt done at 70k i think it was.

you can put your old car on the drive uninsured, so long as its on private property it does not have to be insured. I have 2 uninsured cars sat on my drive, one I only insure in the summer and one is being worked on, one is taxed the other is sorned. If you have any doubt about the car you saw then walk away, these cars are not all that rare, so its possible that a better one will turn up. Remember that cop cars have a hard life start to finish.

From what I understood as long as a vehicle has tax on it it is now required to have insurance??? and the only way around it was to have the vehicle on SORN. I will go and double check because this could help me greatly.

Yep, if a car has current road tax it has to be insured. Put on SORN and as long as you keep the car on private property it doesn't have to be insured.

Only reason i haven;t got one now is my trip to hospital last year and lack of money to keep it. Hope you find what your looking for.

Hi, my ex plod was a dog tbh. I spent 1600 quid getting it sorted but most of that was 735 quid on a speedo, so the best advice i can offer is go for a post 2004 model. Feel free to browse my threads for what I've done to it. Money well spent imho, absalutely fantastic car now.

why not just add your other car to your insurance policy as a temporary cover for a few weeks

try these on ebay, they have good feedback and have a pretty good turn around of new vehicles, seem pretty reasonable on the prices to http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/expolicecar/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25&_trksid=p3984
