Hi all, Iv been informed that the whining i can hear is indeed a noisy power steering pump. Should i worry too much should i look into getting this changed as soon as i can, if i do, where is best to get one from as it seems to be a bit of a minefield of different types of pumps!! thanks, andy
what sort of car is it, also whats the part numbers etc? i have pump hanging about
Its a c70 T5 1999 v reg
not sure if they are same..should be, can you take a picture of yours and post it for me please, need to tally up the part numbers etc
I had heard that filling it with Slick50 steering fluid helps...... It may just be snake oil though!
tbh, i can live with it so long as its not an urgency to change it
Hi when i bought my s60r a few days later it developed a wining noise from the power steering & I panicked thinking it could be the rack or pump but luckily I found this very useful thread which turned out to be the problem, http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=110646 Less than an hour & it was sorted & still fine now.
Thanks, that looks like a good first point of call, so do i just literally take the res cap off, and look for a piece of plastic, and stick it back on? I notice someone drained the res with a turkey baster, is it a case of just drain it into a clean tub, then....pour it back it? Please excuse me if i sound simple! Andy
Just checked and indeed i am only seeing the brass pipe, il have a good go on saturday then!
If all you see is the brass pipe I am pretty sure this will be your problem, It was very fiddly & I couldn't work out how to do it at first! I sucked all the fluid out first with a large syringe & pipe & then removed the reservoir, the brass pipe will need to be pushed back out flush with the inside of the reservoir to enable the L shaped pipe to be put back into place then once in place tap the brass pipe fully back in as this is what secures the L shape pipe in place, Then just refit the the pipes back to the reservoir, refill with fluid & presto no more strange noises feelings through the power steering. Hope this helps!
that helps a lot, does the fluid go all over the place on taking the res reservoir off? never done anything like this before!!
You suck all the fluid out first, but, there will be some fluid lose

Should tell you in the handbook for the car, its normally ATF fluid
Makes you wonder how many people would get there pumps or racks changed when its only a simple fix!

I had the same problem with my 02 C70. The reservoir caps are pressure valved and are renowned for failing. My first port of call would be a new cap.
Any idea where you get the caps from mate?
I got a second hand one from my local Volvo specialist but, to be honest, I don't think it'll put you that much out of pocket to buy one from the dealer. It'll still be your cheapest option (and remedy too hopefully!)

Well, I'm pleased to say that fixing the plastic L shaped piece back on worked a treat! Thanks for everyones help!
Nice one mate I knew it would of been this, nice easy fix & am glad it's sorted.
Been meaning to do this for a while! finally got round to it Sunday. Sucked out all the fluid using a baster, £3 at Tesco, all into a tub. Bit brown has to be said! the plastic arm was still attached but once i had removed the inlet pipe i couls see the brass tube about 5mm out. tapped it in using wooden block and hammer until it was all the way in, put it all back together and filled up with new fluid. All perfect so far!! taken for a good run to warm up and still no issues! So simple and so effective! will do the old mans V70 now as that has the same issue!

It may just be snake oil though![/quote] This intact is true slick is the best power steering oil available and is used by manufactorers in all new vechiles its the using of cheaper finer oils cause the pump to cease
Hi I changed the fluid a little while ago its not power steering fluid Volvo call it central fluid or something like it,it's better than power steering fluid so I am told,ithink it was about £10 per litre .
Guys - get the volvo stuff... It's only 15 quid a bottle and it's designed to work in a volvo!

im guessing were meant to be using the green one coz thats what i was sold as the right stuff for mine?!
The green Pentosin came in for Phase 2 cars 2000 on..... But my S40 which i bought from the first owner at 72,000 is a 2001 and has red ATF in it........it is not me saying so but you can`t mix the two types, you must only use what is in there at the moment. If you mix them you will need a new rack in the months to come typical Ford type trick to get your money! Pentosin at the start was only used for cars in colder climates as it performed better than ATF. As everything the change over of things always takes a time just like to the larger brakes etc.
