A Porsche driver in Germany had a lucky escape when a plane landed on his roof, according to local police on Wednesday. The 55-year-old sports car owner, who was using the little-used airport at Bitburg in western Germany to practice high-speed driving, was travelling at more than 100mph when the aircraft decided to drop down upon him. Perhaps somewhat surprised, he slammed on the brakes, causing the plane to slide off and crash to the ground. Police reports said the pilot was unhurt, but the plane was wrecked. An investigation is underway, but it seems it was the pilot who was at fault – the driver had permission to use the runway, and the pilot had not been in contact with the tower over his landing plans. "It was a miracle that no one was hurt. There was considerable damage done to the plane and the car," said Klaus Schnarrbach, spokesman for the Bitburg police. "The airplane managed to stay steady on the roof at first," he said, adding that the pilot faced possible charges of negligence. "They probably couldn't have done it that well if they had tried," he said. A spokesman said: “We had to prepare a written report for the driver for the damage to his car, as his insurance company didn’t believe him when he called and told there the damage was caused when a plane landed on his roof.” Damn right i would have hit the brakes!
