Afternoon all :B_steerin
My names is James and after many years I have finally got my hands on my dad's old 850 T5. 60K miles which he owned from new and not a mark on it.
I have big plans for this car which I have already started with a K&N pannel fliter and polyeurehane (sp) bushes and roll restrictor.
I'm a friend of Alastair's in case anyone knows him and am keen to get into the sceen. As a day job I work for Ford as an engineer so am more than happy to talk technical stuff.
If anyone's out there give us a shout and I look forward to some replies.
Cheers :)

I was also going to ask. DId you get hold of some roof bars? If not would you be interested in mine. I want to take them off so we could do a swap as I need your trim strips to cover the roof gutters.
Let me know.
Hi Straker , welcome to THE T5 forum . Buy the way wots a Roll Restrictor :insane:
The engine roll restrictor is the bar that comes out of the bulk head and attaches to the top of the engine. Stops the engine from rolling under heavy accel. The volvo unit is a rather flimsey rubber affair. Mine is now purple and made from polyeurethane. Just improves throttle response slightly.
I forgott to mention I have also fitted a strutt brace as well.

So a roll restrictor is an engine top mount by another name, it seems!
I now have roof bars, but thank you for the offer. Doubt you'll have a problem selling them on here! Have a look and you'll see the "Classifieds" sections which is the place to advertise them.

Sorry in Ford mode, :B_blite:
We call them roll restrictors at wrok force of habbit. What did you do with your trim strip. I guess you must have cut it to fit the bars?
I'll have a look at the classified's cheers

1stly welcome
since you mention technical stuff i wouldn'd mind asking a question or 2 lol, how is your knowledge with engine compression???

Hi and welcome.
I recently fitted Roof Rails to my 855 and yes I cut the strips to fit them.
If you are getting rid of a set of rails note that on mine the fitting holes for the rails were covered in a black tape to stop water ingress and there were four 75mm long black plastic blocks which I think are just used to space the trim away from the body and prevent it being pushed in. You will probably need these as well. I'll have a look if I still have mine and if so you are welcome to them. Personally I'd keep the rails :)

I work on Transit running durability so will give is a go. If I don't know the answer chances are someone does and I have plenty of friends in powertrain.
(disclaimer cannot be held responsible for lack of knowledge or thinking I know what I'm talking about when in actual fact I have no clue :dunce: )

I am glad to see some more techie minded peeps joining us. 60K is v young for an 850 - so well done that man.
I didnt want a powerflex top mount because of the added vibration noise into the cabin (as reported by others). My baby is getting on a bit in miles but still goes like a rocket! Any other tuning ideas in mind? Remap, ITG filter? This is a great place for tips and advice on tuning - just trall through the modifications board and you'll see.
Enjoy the ride.

Dave as noticed last Saturday if you had a Poly top mount fitted our fillings would have fallen out :haha:

Personally I think the poly top mounts would ruin the ride and would always have the standard ones.

Hi guys
Personally I don't think you get much more vibration into the cabin when driving although start up and shut off shake is much more noticable with the stiffer top mount. Having said that the original Volvo mount had completely perished when I replaced so my baseline wasn't exactally in top notch condition.

i don't think it makes any difference either, i haven't noticed the vibration that a few have mentioned about. Just made sense to me to try & make the engine as solid & secure & possible
PS welcome to the forum

Thanks for the welcome.
Have you fitted poly suspension bushes? If so have you had any problems with them squeeking because no matter what lubricant I use they are still noisey? I posted a new thread on the 850 discussion page but no bites yet.
Cheers

yes i've got the Powerflex suspension & engine bushes, can't say i've heard any squeeking (although i can't hear much with my exhaust) & i assume the garage only used the supplied grease
sorry i can't help you on that 1

Sounds a stupid question but what colour are they. I wondering if that makes a differance (different compound). I stuck copper slip all over mine and they are pretty quiet but still more vocal than I would like.
I also reckon they were as effective for turn in and steering control as the strutt brace if not more so.

i think they were yellow, i know my engine mount is purple & i'm sure they were a different colour (not 100% on that 1, i've been to sleep since then)
i had literally no bushes left when i got the Powerflex fitted so can only compare it to when the wheels were hanging off :dunce:

Humm mine are black and a previous car (XR2 shame) I fitted with yellow bushes I never heard a peep from.
TIme to place a call to powerflex methinks.
Cheers.

no actually your right mine were black aswell, because i was expecting something with a bit of colour like the engine mount but just looked like normal bushes when they turned up
