Anyone know if the Road Angel GPS bit works on the continent ( i.e. not the camera loaction and alerts stuff), particularly Germany ?
Want to get a more accurate speed reading on the Autobahn's than the speedo if poss and might try to borrow a mate's if it does...anyone know ??

I would imagine not as it's GPS based and no doubt the map only covers the UK.
Be careful when using detectors/scanners in Europe - in many countries, such as France, they are still very much illegal - 400 Euro on the spot fine.

The camera warning won't as the Road Angel is only loaded with UK mapping software.
However, I see no reason why it shouldn't show your speed as it bases this on the time taken to travel the distance travelled between GPS zaps (sorry, I don't know the technical term).
However, it may need the mapping software as part of the calculations (I don't see any reason why it should but then I'm no techie).

Andy

Well my gps will give me the speed i'm going anywhere it can see the sky. Like it can tell me how fast i'm going in a plane across the atlantic if i put it by the window. So I don't see any reason why the Road Angel can't do the same, regardless of whether it knows it's in Germany or not (as in it knows where it is, but it doesn't know that where it is is called Germany - if it has no german maps or knowledge). Follow?
I can't see a reason why they'd only allow the speed feature to work if it knows it's on a road etc.
Does that help?
Borrowing a handheld GPS like a garmin eTrex or a magellan would certainly give you the information you require.
Safe travels,
Martin

I just had a quick word with a contact there.
It won't work as it doesn't have the camera location software on the UK versions and there's no way of easily putting it on.
The radar portion is the illegal bit not the gps bit. They don't advise you take it out of the UK because of this (I noticed they sell a non radar version now too)...
However you could still use the GPS out and a PDA with mapping/camera software on if you wanted to I suppose.
Andrew.

Hi Andrew
I think you're missing the point a bit, Guy's asking whether the GPS bit of RA works .... and that should work anywhere it can pick up satellites and then calculate time and distance ... here or abroad .... surely it's only the database bit of RA which won't work .... but that won't stop the speed read-out will it ... so he can see how fast he's going on the autobhan :)

Thanks chaps - Guy you are truely in tune with me! And they say what's in a name.....
Steve is hopefully bringing his handheld GPS unit as well, so we'll see what happens...
If I can top 160, I'll be pleased....

Best check your tyres are rated for 160mph then :) Most won't be.
