62mph in a 50. Going up Detling Hill nr Maidstone in kent. Overtaking some slower traffic and bang in the layby there they were, mobile speed unit. Thought I had got away with it but what comes through the door this morning... My now clean licence is about to be smudged once more. Can't complain really as got away with so much up till now. Journey to and from work should be more economical now tho :doh:
I really feel for you. I've had a clean licence for ever but the worst case scenario is that I might have picked up 9 points this weekend. Twice maybe got caught by the new zero tolerance cameras on the M4. I'm most worried about getting stuck in a box junction near Marylebone in London on Saturday. Sat there like a turkey blocking traffic from both sides. Then rolled forward when lights were still on red. Juction had a grey coloured Gatso. Will I be caught? Anybody got experience of these?
Jim, I've never heard of Box junction cameras. My first inclination would be that it was a red light camera. Which way was it facing if you were travelling north for example? Andy

Did any of you have GPS camera detectors? They are worth the money - even for mobile ones. They just tap you on the shoulder and remind you to be careful :)

I'm worried that I probably triggered it by rolling forward to get out the way!

It's been in the news down here that they will catch people for going anything over 70 (although they say the actual cut-off speed will vary from day to day). It makes my blood boil I tell you. I know there were plans to outlaw radar detectors (not GPS do-dahs) but parliament ran out of time before the election. So does this mean it's OK to go out and buy a radar detector? Yesterday I felt like buying a radar detector, gun, grenades and a sack of drawing pins.
You could but they'll only get to in next year.... with something like Road Angel 2 you can get radar detector add ons so the cost overall would be less. Andrew.

Perfectly legal at the minute, and would be difficult to outlaw them since the previous contravention (under the wireless telegraphy Act) has been kicked into touch by caselaw. Only trouble is, in the majority of cases you are likely to be done by civvies in a van, under the guise of the "Safety Camera Partnerships" who predominantly use a bit of kit called an LTI 20/20 device. This works on a laser-based method of speed measurement, and all the detectors that I have seen are less than brilliant at detecting these in an adequate time for you to slow down. The best ones are better at detecting the radar-based devices, such as Gatso, but if you are in the market for outfoxing these then you probably deserve all you get since they are generally sited in 30 and 40 limits and traffic-light junctions where, if you are triggering them, most right-minded people would have no sympathy.. Open roads (the type where a bit of lead-footedness is more acceptable) are now increasingly, in my area at least, "policed" by the SPECS system which can't be beaten by any device since it measures your average speed. Increasingly common are Truvelo cameras, which, unless you've got a GPS-based system to tell you where they are, also can't be detected since they do not emit any detectable transmission. At least I appear not to be the only one who gets angered and dismayed by inappropriate use of speed enforcement in otherwise safe places which criminalise the majority. Looks like it's the future, as most forces, mine included, seem intent on doing away with "proper" traffic/road policing by slashing the departments and letting cameras do the job. The trick is, don't register your car; then no-one will know where to send the NIP and you won't get caught. In fact, why insure it or tax it? You'll never got stopped anyway the way things are going, so you've nothing to worry about, since the government seem to want all the police in the country to be filling in forms in the station instead of catching wrongdoers..

Here in London the junctions are monitored by cameras high up these are the same cameras that monitor the bus lanes/yellow box offences, The big grey boxes on the junctions are for red light offences, Matt also here in London we have number plate recognition cameras so the Police can check the car to see if they are taxed/registered/insurance or any offences on the cars. I just recently bought one from ebay last week, it does everything a Road Angel 2 does, and it als speaks to you aswell. For instance, it will say, "Warning, Gatso ahead, check speed, limit 50mph" the it will beep the distance as it gets closer. Personaly, i think the R A are hard to see, the contrast on the screen is bad and not too clear whereas teh snooper is simple and clear.
The only way around it is if the camera didnt get a mug shot. You can then get a relative/friend (now gone back overseas) to claim they drove the car at the time. Also if the mobile camera unit was not displaying a speed camera sign within a reasonable distance to warn you - I think you can (go check this) - say it was entrapment or some other legal term. - http://www.speedcameras.org/ Also if the mobile van was illegally parked then you can say that they cause you to loose concentration based on the fact you were made to avoid them. Ps my last conviction was 62 in a 50.

RA2 users can even record their own locations and then they upload these to the central DB when you connect for downloads. This is pretty much all we can hope for and with mobile cameras due to out number fixed ones by mid 2007. Sometimes the best thing to do if your going onto a journey is to log on to the local police website and check there. Cambs police publish where their mobile cameras will be and also put it out on the Radio.

The time I start work is between 10 and midnight so the down side is rather empty and to take the full width of the road is great, then it's on the brakes for the camera at the bottom. Keep up :D
Box junctions cameras do exist there are some in London, I dont know exactly where though. They are signposted I believe at the relevant locations.
I believe that in some areas of London, traffic wardens are also equipped with digital cameras to snap you parked in a box junction! That makes them even more popular :) Alastair

Its not for parking its for the waiting in the box in a queue of traffic for example.
