Just joined the forum as I'm looking for a nice manual 850 T5R / 850R and this seems to be the place that they all hang out :) Previously had 7 Volvo 900s of varying types and engines, plus an 855 2.0 20v - which was probably the best handling car I've driven in reasonably recent years! Hence my decision to go 850 when looking for a long term 'keeper'. No doubt I'll be asking lots of questions, but hope to offer help once I'm more acquanted with them! Cheers, RT

:welcome: You should feel right at home here I think half the members come from Yorkshire:wavey: They even have a website :hihi: www.vpcuk-yorkshire.org.uk :slap: You should find just what you're looking for. So make yourself at home and don't be afraid to ask questions, someone normally has an answer.

Welcome Buddy :D There's plenty of 850's about at the minute and at cheap money as well. Search on here in the For Sale Section or try www.pistonheads.com or even Ebay :B_thumb: Cheers Lee

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. There are certainly quite a few around at the moment - but I've come across 2 insurance write offs already! The last one was a close call - I was about to buy it (an 855R) but thought that I'd HPI it just in case - good job! Shame as it only had 100k miles up :( Oh well... must be patient... For info, these are the write offs: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1164810.htm http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=330348225681

mate i would not buy a car cause its been a write off ,,if so do a bit of investagating when ect and how much damage, write off just means the car isnt worth having a certian amount of money spent on it i think its around 60% of the cars value,,so if its worth 2500 book price light frontal would be enough to class it as a write off, considering its usually a volvo repair shop thats quoting the work,,lots of decent bodyshops would fix it at a fraction of the price leaving the car with no sign of the damage caused..using even second hand parts,my dads 2000 civic vtis was wrote off after it was stolen with the keys>burgled< it only done 4 mile in which they managed to bend the passenger front arm! prob due to drink,,,but car got new arm, redipped wheel new imobiliser good as new! all done diy for few hundred quid so somtimes the cat d can be a genuine bargin
somtimes the cat d can be a genuine bargin
Gotta agree there, I bought a T reg Vectra diesel a year or two ago for a very cheap price, it was cat D'd because of some very cosmetic damage and some scratches. Provided the cars a decent price, it's not been seriously damaged and the owner isn't trying to hide the fact that it's a write off I wouldn't let it put me off.

Welcome to VPCUK fella, your in good company! :) Good luck finding your dream T5R - I have a (lowly) 854T5 on a standard map and it's more than a match for most cars, so have no doubt you won't be disappointed! I'd recommend pistonheads as well as the 'for sale' section here - been a few R's up recently. Cheers

Thanks again everyone - this is def the place to be :) I'm still wondering about buying a cat D car - the seller of the car mentioned above did say that he only had to change the wing and door from another car and the job was done... on the other hand, I wasn't aware that the insurance co would add extra loading on the premium! ouch!!! So, to follow on from another post I placed here somewhere - does anyone know how many T5R/850Rs were made as manuals? I'm wondering if I'll be waiting a long time to find a good one (assuming that 80% will have been ragged half to death!). Thanks for the tip about drydalls ShortBus - that gets you a shedload of brownie points! :D Any other tips on garages in the Yorkshire area that trade in 850s? All the best, RT

Well what can I say... I have a new toy :D I decided that as the majority of my old Volvos have been autos - including my 850 which had 170k miles up when i bought it - that an auto would be ok. Also given that I was going to give almost £3k for the one I missed, I decided to contact the seller of an 850R auto on ebay. It was a poor advert (which I always like ;) ) but after speaking to him quite a few times I decided to blag it for £2.6 :) Its this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290334173661 100k up, 12 months MOT & tax, started out as a disability car (!) then a company car, then the current owner's wife. Am dead chuffed - I wanted a red one in particular and he says its absolutely mint apart from a few supermarket trolley dings. Most importantly - its HPI clear and totally unmodified :) Picking it up next week - can't wait now! :D:D:D:D:D:D
