the 2.0 is... its a volvo engine, whereas the 1.8 is a mitshi' lump.. and its crap.

I'd say the 2.0. It's marginally quicker with, according to Parkers, only 1mpg difference in economy to the 1.8. For what it's worth, the 2.0T and the T4 are much quicker and not significantly more thirsty (3-4mpg worse). If you go for the 1.8, I *think* the accepted wisdom is to avoid the Mitsubishi GDI engines, as they coke up. Symptoms would be bad emissions (enough to fail an MOT) and possibly rough running if it was really bad. Cure is a decoke and to rant it regularly. I don't think there's anything in particular to look for. If it's an early car, check the electrics are all working, especially any windows. Other than that, creaky suspension, holding the road true, smooth running, no funny noises, no overheating. The usual stuff.

as above the 1.8 seems to be trouble, it's a gdi or some such tosh mates got a v50 i think it is aint run right in a long while

cheers Dave yer my son is only 20, so unfortunately although his first choice would be the T4, his insurers would say otherwise,,most quotes came back 3k ish mmh 2 litre turbo,,do you know the insurance groups of the 2 litre turbo, versus the T4 ?

I had a 2001 1.8 V40 sport when I was 18 and loved it, it was more than fast enough and i had no problems with the engine what so ever. Im sure at 20 the insurance shouldnt be that bad, I got me V70R at 19.

i only did a quick searchy, but the T4 was giving returns around 3k mark ?? i know 100% he would love the T4,,as he loves mine,,just a bit big for him :)
cheers Dave mmh 2 litre turbo,,do you know the insurance groups of the 2 litre turbo, versus the T4 ?
2.0 is group 11 2.0T is group 15 T4 is group 16 The trouble at 20 is you want the 2.0 to be quicker than your mate's VTR and it, well, isn't. If you are considering turbo engines, check the condition of the turbos too. They should boost noticeably, even the 2.0T. Smoke=bad. Whine=bad. Check condition of the oil, water, (precaution, heads aren't, I think, a problem) and engine bay in general. There are plenty of 2.0T and T4s around with decent history though if it's an option.

VTR's are easssssy... the VTS however, may be more of a concern. although the problem is, there's always going to be a faster car; and at his age, the insurance for his likewise mates would be redicious compared to a volvo s40 2.0. I had a v40 2.0 when I was 17 and it was the largest CC engine out of my mates, and the quickest.
