Hi All. I bought my first Volvo on tuesday ( '96 T5) and it's dead already!!
Went to leave work yesterday and the little sod won't start. It will turn over but nothing..........
Plenty of fuel in the tank, good battery, immobiliser light not flashing when I turn over the engine.
Great start eh?
All advise very very welcome................
Cheers

hi and :welcome:
not the best of starts - excuse the pun :)
auto or man?
are you sure battery good, had similar prob but battery 'sounded' ok but just didn't have enough in it to turn and fire
Post 149129 by gareth on 2006-10-06 10:20:03
Hi, it's a manual. The car turned over fairly strongly so I assumed it had a good battery though it's almost flat now( repeated turning over in frustration!).
Now that you mention the battery thing.....
Yesterday morning on the way to work I could have sworn I noticed the headlights dim when I operated the windows or braked. Thought I was imagining it tho.

Sounds like fuel pump, press the little nipple on the side of the HP Fuel rail and see if some squirts out (Use a rag to catch it) - BE CAREFULL...
Does it hum when you switch the ignition to position 2.

Check the fault codes. It could be something like a cam position sensor.

But where to look? I has been P!$$ing down with rain here too.
My regular mechanic can't come out & his diagnostics wont work on a 96 Volvo only 99 on. I wonder if I should call an auto electrician?
I'm utterly gutted. Picked the car up on monday night & drove almost 400 miles home without missing a beat, then yesterday.........dead as a dodo.
Any other way to check fault codes? Really can't afford a main dealer.

Join the RAC or AA - Costs 40 - 60 quid - then hire a car for 24 hours while you wait for the service to run, thats about £25...
It's cheaper than a garage and they usually find the fault.
Post 149142 by gareth on 2006-10-06 10:39:30
Ok Dreadly, just tried that. The pump does hum for a second or two when the key is in position 2, then I tried pressing the nipple and nothing happened.
Bad news??

Err, I'm pretty sure fuel should come out but I'm not a mechanic!!! - Maybe VT or somebody could add something regarding this.
It's just I have heard of others with the same problem as you and it turned out to be fuel pump.
Has it logged any faults - A cheap code reader from Halfrauds will do, or it may be one of those models with a built in code reader?
Have you taken a plug out and checked for a spark? (The basics)...
All you need is Fuel/Air/Spark - Try to find what you are missing.. - Oh and compression, but if that's missing you have got real problems :)
Post 149144 by gareth on 2006-10-06 10:48:58
Spark test next. Cant find the Torx drivers in the workshop here.
Someone "borrowed" them & the plug socket is missing from the socket set.
It just gets better and better.

Lol, sometimes a flat head screwdriver can be 'Bodged' to undo torx bit's with the help of an angle grinder, I have used an allen key before.
I am the master of tool bodging, cos I grew up on a farm. - Have you tried a hammer ?

Problem is, the spark test will only prove whether you have a spark or not. It won't tell you why!!! You really need to get the fault codes read because that will save you a lot of faffing around. Things like cam sensors being faulty will mean the engine won't fire.
Adam.

Might be a gallon of petrol and a match the way I feel right now:pants:
I'll have to get it towed to my mechanic( I've got free recovery with my insurance) but his machine can only read codes on '99 on volvos, dont know anyone else around and really cannot afford to pay a main dealer. I'm as sick as a small hospital!

I don't suppose there is the possibility of this being OBD I is there? I am always confused by years and changes to spec.
At the risk of appearing an idiot I'll ask.
Is the OBD interface inside the car or under the bonnet?
Post 149163 by gareth on 2006-10-06 11:52:52
Its OBD II, inside the car, forward of gear lever under a coin holder.

B*****k's. Hoped for you that it may have been a 95 car. Just registered later. Nevermind, someone on here will have the answer.

Possibly another stupid question but here goes......Will it jump or bump start?
Where are you, maybe someone is nearby who has the knack to fix these things.

Sounds like the early version of OBDII your mechanic should be able to get some readings with his reader
As said add your location to your profile and there maybe someone near to you who maybe able to help (beat me to it)

Try a set of jump leads on it from a decent car i.e 2ltr or bigger. Leave it running for 10mins and then try and start yours up. If it does, then id be inclined to change the battery and go from there.

He already stated it turned over no problem...
Post 149185 by gareth on 2006-10-06 13:53:26
I have a horrible feeling it's not the battery. We tried jump starting it, no difference, just turning over. Don't really have the energy to try push start almost two tonnes of car either !
I've had a suggestion that it may be the crank position sensor. Anyone got any thoughts?
BTW all this help is really really appreciated. Thanks a million.

When my car had the problem of not starting, it would turn over with no problems but it just wouldnt catch. Changed the battery and it started immeadietly.

try and get the codes read mate! maybe someone local can
Post 149205 by t5owner on 2006-10-06 14:59:17
Looks like your gonna have to bite the bullet
You really need the codes read so you can find out whats going on if any have been logged
As adam says it could well be the cam position sensor which if out of alignment will not allow the car to start

Here is the idiots guide of most starting problems with 1992-1995 850's (all models, T5 especially), I know because I have seen and been through them all, starting from the most obvious..(FORGET ABOUT FUEL/BATTERIES/ETC..ETC..)
1..Coil/module breakdown
2..Crankshaft (TDC) sensor
3..Fuel pump relay (check fuse)
4..Relay for fuel/ ignition system (under front cover at radiator fan)
5..Your ECU..it is usually not the ECU.
Hope this helps, any starting problems with 850's contact me, advice is FREE your@themaddam.wanadoo.co.uk

Hi Guys. Just a quick update- I've just spoken to the garage and they can't read the fault codes, definitely only '99 on Volvos, however they went about it the old fashioned way and say that there is no spark ( thats something I hope). Hopefully just a coil/amp module???????
Is it possible it's the immobiliser? I'm just grasping at straws cos I need the car running by the weekend.

It could also be the cam position or crank sensor!!! lol. All the answers on this thread have given you some ideas, so read through again, write them down, and start changing things.

Aw Bo!!ock$, back to the drawing board! A coil is €120+vat over here and I dont even want to know how much the sensors are!
Unfortunately when you are on a bit of a budget changing things can really hurt but I suppose I could look at it as preventative maintenance.

PAULLYP, you are officially the Volvo Guru!:bow_kneel
I really owe you one mate, a million thanks.
Its alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now for the science bit:
Paul suggested replacing the fuel inj system relay located under the fan cowling in the engine bay. I bought one this morning and went to the garage to fit it myself, when I went to fit it I noticed that TWO of the wires on the relay connector were badly corroded, green in fact.
A quick trip to Maplins for some connectors later and the car fired up on the first turn of the key( albeit with the help of a booster pack).
I'm as happy as a dog with two mickeys!!
Now for that top engine mount......................

I believe that the more we can fix our own cars, either from our own knowledge or that of others the more likley we are to keep our cars. I will always endeavour to steer people away from Main Dealer hourly rates when and if I can. I don't know about you Guys and Girls but my other half goes Ballistic when I tell her how much it costs to fix the various things that can and eventually do go wrong with cars, however if it can be fixed on the cheap all the better. Anyway I am away to absorb more knowledge (cider). CUL8R,P:wave23d:
