Hey all,
Well my dads 940GL J reg with its lovely 290 odd thousand miles has broke down today once again. RAC had to come out at 6:30 this morning. Apparantly an ignition switch has failed as the ignition lights came on but nothing else!
After being towed to Volvo stealer garage a long list of other things have failed! ignition switch, radiator nose cracked, automatic transmision inhiberter possibly faulty (what ever this is).
My dad is saying fix it! mad eh? What dya all reckon he should do? Ill print it out and show him what u all think :D

to be honest depends on the rest of the condition of the vehicle if it is ruff scrap it and search for another one if it is very good then get it sorted they are good old work horses

Speaking as a man who has only once parted with one of his previous cars (the rest all live in a barn together !)and also being a 'keep it till the floor falls out ' type of mechanic a car will last all your life if you want it too and keep on spending the money. There is something nice about proudly announcing that your motor has hundreds of thousands of miles on it, my petrol Laguna's got 222,000 on it and people often remark 'but it's a Renault !' (whatever thats suppose to mean !) I'd keep your Volvo, you know it, you know whats wrong with it and whats right with it, buy another one and you start all over again !

Yeah, i know what you mean .... it kinda annoys me when poeple have a go at the Renaults, iv drivin them for years now ... 1916v's, R25's and the girlfriend has a 2ltr 16v Megane which she has had for 4 years and i still own a 14 yr old 21turbo and i can honestly say that not one of these cars has ever broke down ... the interior trim does not rattle ... switches dont fall off in my hand, they dont burn oil ... and my old 21 has even got some goodies that my C70 does not have and they all went like stink and the secret is just to keep up the service's as you would any car ... oh .. and they know a thing or two on how to build a championship winning car and engine aswell lol.
Anyway to answer the original question, if you are sentimentally attached to the Volvo then i would get it fixed, you have to expect these things from older cars, and tbh apart from the auto box problem they sound like pretty basic and easy enough things to rectify.

I understand about the sentimental side of things. Hes had it for so long that I can see why he wants to spend more on it. I just want him to get a new V70 so I can drive it around, stick some 19"s on, u know the usual :D The new V70s are slightly smaller than the 940 types though so that puts him off.

I believe the 16v was volvo derived but mines got the 8-valve Renault lump that was strangely also used in the Volvo 300 and 400 series. I always thought they were a load of cr@p to be honest but now I've got one (that has been thoroughly abused from new !) I can honestly not fault it ! However it is rather slow and has got a weird power band (flat as a turd up to about 85 then goes like hell....acceleration right where you need it most !) but It's cost me a hell of a lot less money to run then the T5 has so far !

If he looks round far enough he could probably find a nice V90 3.0 or something to bring him a bit more up to date. There's one near me that looks very nice, big! not for sale though :sorry:
