Now that interesting.
I would have thought as you brake the brakes/wheels get hot, as the wheel gets hot it expaneds, so if the wheel nuts are tight and the wheel expanding I'd would have thougth that it would have made the wheel nuts grip the wheel tighter.
Or I'm I talking ££££££££
1996 850 T5 AWD - Self tuned M4.4 ECU with COP`s, B5254T ( S60R internals in a 850 block ) ostrich 2.0 , VXR injectors @ 3.8 bar, K24 turbo with a 6+6 compressor wheel, 3.25" MAF, top mounted Dump Valve, RN Exhaust manifold, 3" downpipe with 200 cell cat, 2.75" Stainless exhaust, Brembo calipers, S60R brake discs, stainless RIP kit, 3" Throttle body,
I agree with you, makes no sense..............?
also looking at using something like this in future???

the studs can expand too. Titanium expands a bit less than steel although not by much. Stronger though so might not snap when loose..!
bit of info here http://www.crashforensics.com/wheelandhubfailures.cfm
It mentions under tightening & surface condition on the wheels (paint) can be a cause of studs/bolts failing. Also says overtighening can over stress the bolts, so when you come to a hard corner/heavy the bolts pass their limit
If you haven't changed the torque you tighten them up by, it seems to say the Volans are causing it??

130 Nm or ft lb? the link below says 80 ft lb. That is just something pulled off the net for road cars though
http://www.discounttire.com/infoCent...que.html#volvo
At work we torque to about 70% of the yielding stress of the bolts (flanged joints for example). If there are any leaks the lads like to tighten more to stop the gas/steam/oil whatever pissing out, hard to convince them otherwise. If the gasket/sealing surfaces are wrong then even huge torque values won't help and can damage the bolts even
Not saying your torque values are wrong by any means just thinking out loud
//edit
don't want to bore the ££££ out of everyone about bolts but here is a torque table showing 105 ft lb is 70% of yield for 1/2" or 12 mm bolts (dry, without lube )
https://www.fastenal.com/content/fed...20for%20B7.pdf
So 130 ft lb is about 90% of yield.....& 140+ ft lb would be around the point where the bolt starts to yield (not snap, just that is the point where damage should start)
This is industrial stuff nowt to do with cars really but there it is anyway.

Yes mate I guess that is where I was going with that one.....nipped up nice & tight, embarrass a few BMWs then 'ping' x5. Could be wrong like just thinking out loud. The effect is worse with lube also (e.g. copper slip) but don't want to start that argument again....tightening torque should/can be reduced IF lube is used.

So after brands, I dumped it in the garage and walked off. so from this :
to this:
I finally got back to the garage over the weekend to remind myself how much work I have ahead.
2 Wings for a start:
then all sorts of stuff underneath, brake calipers, brake discs, droplinks, wishbones, alloys, tyres, hub, etc etc
and just to rub it in, the tyres and brakes only had 4 laps on them
Going to try and empty out all the gravel from the engine bay and see if the engine is ok, then strip it down and start again..........
