Sealant mate, but as you say, cant see a very thin layer of sealant making that much difference and if it did,
surely both cams would be tight?

I'm told this problem is because of a warped head

That can't be right otherwise we would never be able to do the head gasket?

    Would it just "wear in"?

That's what I was thinking, skim the bottom of the head maybe, but the top????

Wear in, apparently not. The alloy will get hot and seize up, so I'm told..........?

    Hmmm

Are all 4 the same then? Warped in the same place?

What is the history of the heads?

    Is the block straight?

A cylinder head specialist should be able to sort it either way, being aluminium it should be possible.

I need to check the others

What is the history of the heads?

1 was in the car last time I raced
    2 came from BT
3 came from an engine Dalhousie supplied, just has a broken valve, no need to suspect anything else
4 I think I got years ago as it was a ported head

    Is the block straight?

Cams are locking up just on the bench, not bolted to the block, but I'll check it

Any recommendations down south for this?

    Was thinking the same

Torque it down and test with a straight edge

I've got to to rip the head off Gul's engine shortly, that one was well cooked and acting as a water pump, so I am expecting in to have warped it's head, so it will be interesting if I have the same issues., whilst it's in bit's I may well forge the bottom end and shim the block from added security, not that many people crack 2.3 liners, but better safe than sorry whilst I'm in there, future proofing I think they call it, as she is always receiving olives cast of upgrades...

It's odd that on the one that the inlet is stuck on, you'd imagine both to stick if the warped head theory has anything to do with it.

As for garage time, to cold for me and I have to sort the place out fully before starting or continuing any project at present

it is a bit weird, on one of my heads, its the exhaust that is stuck????

it is cold out there, that why I have heating in my garage! but its sounds like we both need a tidy up

Are they completely dry ie no lubrication? If so could it be as simple as a gum type residue binding things up?
Just trying to go back to the start to find root cause. Not trying to insult or upset.

Sorry re-read from the start of the problem.

So at what point of tightening the covers do they lock up?

Might be worth doing a progressive tighten to see where it happens. Is the cam then hitting the cover? Or is the tightening causing an unwanted load somewhere?

I cleaned the points of contact before installing the the cams, putting a small amount of fresh oil on the contact points, so they are not dry
and all seems well. place the cam cover on and push it down, then some cams become tight.
I say some, as we are talking 4 different heads.
Tighten up the bolts only seems make things worse

are the cams hitting the cover? what makes you say that?
that had crossed my mind, why they would I don't know, but interested in your thoughts

I know there is a specific way to torque the head bolts, is there one for the cam cover?
