    460 Turbo

So, thought it was probably about time I started a project thread for this.
A little old skool for VPC, but seems the best place for it.

Anyway, here cometh the project thread for the last series 1 460 Turbo auto in the counry. Probaby. According to Howmanyleft anyway.
There were two, I had the other one before this, but that was nicked and chased around the local park by the wardens, eventually winding up literally nose down in a bush after catching some serious air.

I've had this one for a couple of years now, I think. Hard to keep track with my ever changing fleet.

Started off a bog standard car, aquired from Jamesy:

1993 460 CD Turbo auto, lovingly thrown together in an old DAF factory in Holland
B18FT - 1.7 Renault sourced engine, shipped to Porsche who designed the forced induction system. A whole 120 rampaging dutch horses.
Garrett T2 (tiny) turbo with intercooler.
    Automatic slushbox.
    Vague-o-matic steering.
Metallic urine in colour, as described by James himself.

Jamesy named it Ray-le-Otter, after the sweary Viz character.
Apparently, it broke down once, and when he opened the bonnet the French engine stared back at him and said "££££ you Monsieur!"

Only pic I could find. Shows how it appeals to the laydees.

Next came a "Robou" modded ecu. Robou is a bloke off of the 480 club forum who mods ecus.
All 400 series use the same running gear.

That made the boost guage do this:

I stuck an eggcrate grille from an early 440 and a late boot spoiler on.

It met a couple of members while serving as holiday transport:

    Jimbob:

    And Martin:

Then came a set of graphite wheels:

That's pretty much as it stands at the minute.

Currently putting out around 170-180bhp. Probably more likely the lower.

    Want more

Just changed discs and pads all round along with new rear calipers, as the handbrake mechanism is built in and is an utterly ££££e design, so always jam up.

Now, for those of you always complaining about your 280s, or even 302s, spare a thought for those few of us still insane enough to run 400s...

    Front:

    Rear:

That's a whole 255mm up front and 225 at the back, folks!
Christ, the N/A and anything below 2.0 cars have solid front discs too!
    Lol

There's pretty much nothing available for 400s, so I'll probably stick some grooved discs on in future and braided lines with decent fluid to firm the pedal up a little

    So, plans...

    Better stoppers like I said.
40mm drop on Lesjofors springs (OE manufacturer, and about as good as you can get for a 400. Had PI springs on a 480, they were crap)
Bilstein B4s all round (again, as decent as available)
Poly bush what I can with what I can get hold of/make fit
    T3 from a 940td to replace the standard T2
Slightly bigger injectors, don't know what yet though
    ATF cooler
Oil cooler, both to replace the crappy standard items.
    2.5" stainless exhaust.
Erm... Probably more, that I can't think of at the moment.

Then see what goes bang first.

    My target is around 220bhp.
A little optimistic maybe, and not all that high by modern standards, but if I get there remember that this little thing only weighs around 1100kg.

    Should be fun

About time too. Still got your Grunt Mitchell gloves on I see

Ray le Otter is looking good! The pic above is in front of Victor Pasmore's Apollo Pavillion btw. Also a collection of squares considered to be ££££ ugly by some.

    No glove, no love

Cheers Dave. No need to sound so surprised though! Lol

I've got a couple of other sets of wheels in stock that I'm toying with.

Still have the Ronals, but think it would need to be really low to pull them off.
Also have a set of 17" classic twin 5 spoke TSW s (forget the name) in graphite. Might be a little big though for a 400 really, needing mega low profile tyres.
Edit: Here they are fitted to a 480 before I bought them:

    Hmm...

Hehe. I remember them wheels well, from Glasgow they came?

Personally, I'd stick with the Taurus(?) and try the R Turbos when it's down
...can't say I'm keen on them TSWs for one of these.

Nice car, looking forward to seeing how it progresses. I was given a 440 when I lived in Spain, went well enough, until it blew a core plug.

    Cheers guys.

Yeah, the jury's still out on the TSWs. But they only cost me postage from Glasgow, so not so bad.
Think the Ronals will probably end up being fitted once it's been dropped.

Just posted a 480 turbo being broken, shame looks complete and it's running in the pics with good oil pressure etc.

Took it to see Craig (TC) yesterday.

He looked at some bits of paintwork for me and the rear arches that have started to let go.
Hopefully get them sorted before they get too bad. Anyone who's had a 400 will know it's frightening how fast the tin worm tears through the rear end of these once it starts

    Aye, they were a bit.
The electronics certainly were, then built down to a price, giving them a terrible reputation for relliability

I've got a rusty 480. Wanna buy it?
