Drove in to work today to test it out. The much lower might point point took a few miles to get used to.

Slightly sharper take up when feeding it in. You sort of feel the gears more when swapping cogs (must be the different oil). In crawling traffic 1st or 2nd there is less shunting surprisingly over the DMF (presumably less wobbling about). Not really run it out hard to notice any difference in engine pickup.

    Brakes better.

Chap who did clutch (did last one on T5) said all looked good underneath and that the existing clutch looked to have plenty of meat on it, but friction surfaces did look very dry and polished, so maybe why I noticed it slip a few times.

    New tyres next week.

Admirable efforts to keep on top of mechanical parts, a good read.

I am noticing that the gears are a bit more mechanical / knotchy (like an old Italian car!) when cold (especially first), this must be down to the alternative fluid now in it. After 10 mins though, pretty much back to how it was before. Rest not much difference as yet (not driving it hard), I'm sure it will spin up alot fast though when getting after it.

Just need to pull the whole drive-train out and put it in something half the size

Had another cracked rim repaired! Did look into getting two fully refurbed ones from States, but was coming in at 850+ landed duty / tax paid! and not paying 600 quid to Volvo!

    Very nice job anyway.

4 new tyres yesterday - went with the one Lee recommended - Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2.

Really good grip (huge!) and a bit quieter. Make the crappy Toyo's that were new when I got it seem like junk (low grip, harder riding and noisier!).

Might get the rims tidied up through the summer.

    Towing season starts tomorrow....

    Jon,

My gearbox feels exactly the same when cold. First gear is a real pig to get when you first try to pull away.
What I have found is if you leave the car idling for 5 minutes before you pull away, I know not everyone can do this so might take some forward planning but, it really works. First gear slips straight in once the thicker oil has had a chance to warm up a little. 5 minutes of idling is all it takes.

It is not such a pain as once driven off, unless into town or through area with lights chases are you will not use first again till it is warm.

Car feel great now, those new tyres turn off the dsc thing and pop in the mid suspension setting and it really hussles

I have used Castrol and Red Line oils on my gearbox. I find that Castrol works better when cold.

What grade of oil were you using?

Don't forget Jon and I are both using a Solid SMF (which looks like a thing of beauty ) and, therefore, a thicker gearbox oil to keep gearbox chatter from the layshaft down when at idle. Typically upgrading from the stock 75W80 to a 75W140NS! I don't believe Castrol manufacture a Non Slippery gearbox oil of the same grade, so you can only use the Redline.

TTV Racing - Solid Billet Steel Single Mass Flywheel, contains no moving parts or springs.

All vibration from the engine will be transferred through to the gearbox and will manifest itself as 'chatter' and can be heard when Idling, which increases with use of the Air conditioning. Once driving, the noise stops.
The amount of noise varies depending on the wear and amount of backlash in the gearbox. Using a thicker gear oil, reduces the idle chatter immensely.

    Lee,
I completely forgot about the SMF... I'm still on the original clutch so I'm using the stock oils.
I have a friend with a M56 gearbox that has fitted a SMF. Can he use the 75W140NS oil also?

Had a guy come up to me when tinkering in pits way more interested in the R than any race cars.

Walks up when drivers door open going, "Whoa and R, is it going to be a manual - YES".

Had a good chat on it and mod it has and and to fire up the big exhaust for him.

Have you tried starting with it in first and the clutch pedal in?? Should reduce load on the starter too. W

Minor scrapping noise at low speed now (took front wheels of and nothing), will have to get it looked at by people I trust asap.

Fans just started being on all the time. Bought whole Thermostat housing - hopefully this (will get it scanned - don't even mentioned Vida) and either way get that put on.

At some point I am going to looked to get the front brake pads binned. The braking is really not that good (mind it is well over 1.7 tonnes with tow bar and full fuel - maybe more!). It was truly horrendous when I bought it (almost 2 years back, but then all 4 discs were scrap. I have the Brembo Cross-drilled std sized 330's all round with the pads that come in that kit, I though they were OK initially (but then how often do you really hammer the brakes in a huge tow barge), but frankly the fronts (pads) are gonna have to go in the bin. Gonna talk to a few people I get race stuff from, see if they do a higher grade pad for these front calipers.

Yep it is faster than a std one gotta get them working better. 1 lap on a track would have them totally F*%cked.......

Once all above thinking few more summer tweaks (if I can squeeze into a very busy 6 months of towing now........), sure I can fine a slot to loose some cash!

Just looking at this again https://www.diyauto.com/manufacturer...-s60r-by-dougy Maybe I shouldn't!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thumbs up

Scrapping noise turned out to be nothing - just the helper donuts I have in the back springs (to stop back dropping when towing and with loads of stuff in boot), just catching the mid-point of the rear driveshafts occasionally - so no big deal.

Fans - turns out was the AC needed a recharge and all sort (lots of AC codes when plugged into diagnostics), recharge when home (no leaks, but system very low, probably not been charged for years), all back to normal now. Pity I bought the £130 quid Thermostate housing!

Boot lock being buggered, meant the cover had to be broken round top two bolts on the side to even get in there to get it out - it was a part of the mechanism that had come adrift - so much for new Volvo parts! (less than 5 months), fixed and fine now (phew as race tomorrow!), have to fix the bust plastic over next few weeks, maybe when I do the rear door loom replacement (for the Tailgate open issue - huge amount of trim has to come out to get at the plug for this in the top passengers side corner (stupid) - thanks to Lee yesterday for getting me the part no. for that and giving the car a once over.

Do have a bit of a leak on two seals on Gearbox, but on checking level was full (over full, was expecting to be low), so must have been over filled - maybe extra oil putting pressure on the seals - will monitor it for now (give a good wipe before mot late this month).

It was good to meet up with Lee yesterday morning (then Brands trackday passenger rides in the afternoon ). He ran Vida on the car and all looks pretty good, few minor things to follow up on.

We had a comparative run out in each others cars which was interesting, baring in mind each cars mods.

Then lastly Lee did the turning off of the Volvo std running lights (save bulbs popping - why have on all the time and taking life out of the bulbs), now like a normal car! And did the one flash main bean thing where when home if you flash that before taking key out (or might be after), you can get all the front lights on to allow you to get in the front door at home, then then all go off aft 60 seconds - v.cool.

Had a minor leak on gearbox to transfer box fixed last week. The seal from Volvo was 40 quid! Some mark-up on that!

Getting the bottom A arms poly bushed (as deemed on the wonky side at recent Mot), another Lee recommendation Tracking will be done straight after.

Defo, feels more like a new / more modern car. Think it will be alot more noticeable at the front, but rear will get done (age catching up with it more than miles on bushes me thinks), just turned 110k.

Mate getting an almost new (<7kk miles) Audi S4 today (not the loopy RS - the civilised one, but still 3.0 V6 TT). So will have to see how something like that goes against roughly the same market area barge from previous generation. About same size (same length, tad wider, 350bhp and 369ft/lbs tad more weight, but with a super modern 8 speed auto). Will probably be alot faster, even though I'm close on the engine numbers...... Might mean I have to get more done!
