    Agreed!

But for the sake of others who may be interested, here are two points which give a clue as to why you get better economy -

    1. How the fuel is burned will determine how much energy is used to push that piston!

    2. Tuning changes the torque characteristics to the extent that it allows you to alter your driving style in a way that lends itself to more economical driving under many conditions.

Details will be saved for the beer! You're buying the first round.

Ive done over 60,000 miles now with the 310 rica and a 3000 or so before the rica.

    cars done 160k in total.

I now get around 30mpg on a normal 70ish cruise on motorway and A roads with occassional hard accelerates from roundabouts etc.

Slightly harder driving gets around 29 over same rouds before rica i used to get high 27.9 etc, so its around a 1mph improvement so around 3% ish.

This is all using shell optimax.

Best ever was 34mpg on a 300 mile trip with family and full load at a constant 50-60mph or so on empoty a roads.

Ive yet to try the mpg when driving harder on a a/b roads as im not that bothered then but i know its a lot less than this and dont even bother around town!

I do keep meaning to get a diesel instead but my old escort 18T diesel only used to get 39 - 43 mpg so there doesnt seem the point at moment.

So considering performance its pretty good, what other family estates will retunr a regular 30mpg and do a std qtr in aroun 14-15 secs!

An you can get a wardrobe in the back1

If only the insurance was more reasonable

At the time, for my particular car, it felt like worse mpg for constant legal motorway speeds but better mpg when doing around 85. Dunno if that's atypical or something to do with volvo tuning the cars to be economical for legally sitting on motorways.
