I assume you've checked the static timing.
bit of brake cleaner or easy start in the carb, while cranking?
you got fuel to carb? filters get blocked over time and tank insides pell off, blocking fuel pipe..
these are simple as. fuel, spark..and of you go.
I'm using a jerry can on the roof at the moment as I've got no idea what the inside of the tank is like.
I've got fuel to the pump then to the carb and then on the plugs. I've got a spark on all plugs so in theory it should start but it wont.
It's either got low compression on 3 & 4 or its being flooded by the carb.

you running it through lift pump?

The car is a 1983 244 GL, its got points, condenser and a mechanical fuel pump.
These no sensors or electric fuel pumps.

Yes, lift pump. Mechanical pump.
I think your problem is fuel delivery.

But on the inner wing nearside at the front there is a Bosch Control Unit and on the 740 this is a Powerstage unit and if the screw does not earth because it`s rusty...no start or run...or bad misfires.
Because your 240 is distributor etc. it may not be a cause but worth checking!
Had this trouble with both my 740`s...
Even just tipping new petrol in the carb aperture it should still fire and run if only for seconds!

After another 2 hours this afternoon I`ve finally got it started.
When it first started all you could here was the sound of drive belts slipping and you could smell burning rubber.
Once they stopped slipping all I could hear was the baffles rattling in the exhaust.
I let it run until it warmed up and had to adjust the slow running, it idles nice no funny noises or smoke

Fitting a while block will be a right pita.
