    What would you suggest....

    As you have probably guessed by now,(after lots of stupid questions from me) I am new to the ownership of a 1996 850 T5.

    I am in love with the car, really would like to enhance to power from the engine, I am looking at turbo change adjustable actuator exhaust etc.

    What would the learned folk advise the best route for me to follow, I have in mind to buy all the goodies bit by bit and then have the engine rebuilt, honed ringed etc (as the poor girl has 195k on the clock and deserves a full rebuild) along with installing upgrades.

    Is there any distance in lightening the flywheel, balancing the crank?

    Any advice gratefully received.

    if your going the full hog like that, the crank from an RN engine (post 2002) is already lighter than an original 850 crank. You can also get a lightened billet flywheel from TTV, & an ARD light-weight pulley will finish it off

    flywheel = 2.7kg lighter
    crank = 2.8kg lighter
    pulley = 1.6kg lighter

    as i've got to got conrods yet i've gone for a 93mm crank instead of the T-5's 90mm, you'll need later spec short-skirted pistons as well to do that. Takes the cc from 2319 to 2396

    Depending on what power you would like depends on what route you do but for me im looking at 300+
    Fully rebuilt engine with forged rods
    850r clutch
    larger intercooler
    Rip kit
    3" intake pipe
    3" throttle body but going to try a 60mm throttle body to see if it does make the on/off better than the 3"
    custom 19t turbo
    1.4 bar actuator
    3" angled down pipe and 3" exhaust
    vxr injectors
    quaife diff
    Walbro fuel pupe
    And mapping

    That looks like the route I would be aiming for.
    Luckily the guy who is in the unit next to us owns Lynx power engineering and has offered to assist me in building the engine, I am a little apprehensive but excited at the same time.

    Ecu wise would this be a specialist remap or a replacement Ecu to run the modifications?

    That's good news being able to live map, didn't know if it was possible on these, the only experience I have had with Ecu mapping is on my V6 Clio and in the past on an old cossie I had back in the eighties! And to be honest it's all a bit scary.

    RN is what Johnny Foreigner calls the P2 cars.

    You want a crank from a 2.3 T5 engine between the end of 2002 and the end of 2004.

    Really?

    The revisions of these engines can be sketchy at times. The B5234t3 engine for example, the "t3" bit is supposed to denote the particular generation of that engine number but the t3 was revised at lease 3 times during it's run, including the revised crank, etm and ignition.

    The 2002 B5234t3 lump can be hit and miss when it comes to the lightened crank as they just mixed and matched stuff from the parts bin, making it hard to pin down what's actually in there.
