Fitting the Upper Engine Mount Small Bush was a little more complicated (though not difficult) than anticipated so I thought I would do a "How To" thread on the subject.
Tools and Parts
- 15, 17, 18, 19mm spanners and sockets
- Electric Drill and Drill pieces
- Hacksaw
- Large Hammer/Mallet
- Flat Headed Screwdriver
- Grips/Pliers
- Copper Grease
- Powerflex Bushes
Firstly, I used the spanners to remove the engine mount bar entirely.
I then removed the bolt holding the two brackets to the rear bush, allowing access to remove it.
Next, I drilled out the bush as the original is pressed in and is surrounded by a metal sleeve (like the wishbone bushes). Once it's drilled out enough I was able twist the centre rod out with a pair of plumbers grips.
Next, it was time to remove the metal sleeve, I did this my using a hacksaw to cut to an incision in two places within the sleeve to weaken it, and then gave the sleeve a smack on the edge with the flat headed screwdriver and my hammer until the sleeve dropped out (I used a 4LB Sledgehammer). Out came the sleeve.......
Once the sleeve was out, I was ready to fit the new Powerflex Bushing, this comes in two parts with a new metal centre rod. First I gave the bush and the hole in the engine mount bar a good coat of copper grease.
Fitted the bush to the bar, this was a reassuringly tight fit but went in by hand without the need for any tools. It doesn't have to by perfect at this stage as when it's clamped back on the the car the action of bolting back together will finish pressing the bushing firmly in to place.
Next, I reattached everything to the car, torqued the bolts up and now, along with the previously fitted top engine mount and strut brace tension bushes, I have a completely Powerflexed (Black Series) top engine mount assembly.
