Well, after Harvey kindly donated his old system that he removed from his R to Craig, I've been (politely) pestered to help fit the thing. So after working out what was needed to get it done (angle grinder and new M8 nuts ) He popped round today and we had a dabble...
First off... safety first, no relying on a jack for us, good ol' engineering bricks it is!
Then Craig took the plates off to give me access to the pipe...
...and I began fighting with the frozen studs on the old exhaust...
I continued to fight with the exhaust for some time lol...
Until I eventually won...
Craig slapped a new gasket on the R exhaust...
Now, I was expecting a few differences between the two types but I was surprised to find that it was only the hanger pins were out by 3" or so...
Mated to the cat...
Hangers modified and the mid section hung and there's Craig refitting the plates...
It took a bit of cutting and grinding to get the back box fitted and the tips will need extending by about 2" to clear the bumper but in it all went rather well.
Here's the 1st start...
He wasn't keen to start with as it didn't sound much different, if a little deeper but when we went for a spin down the dualie, oooohhhh... it makes a lovely warm hum under load. Loud but not "loud" just enough to let you know it's there. The car seems to pull a lot better too, especially top end
Yes - it's a V70R exhaust on a D5
