so yesterday i arranged to fit the 16t at my friends garage, in order to have the use of the ramp for the day i had to refit the front and rear bumper to his hotrod so we could push it off the ramp...
that took two hours off my turbo time, hour later the turbo was off...
an hour after that i'd swapped the blanking plate and water pipe and fitted two new studs into the turbine
then i started to fit the new turbo but the first nut i tightened snapped the stud in the exhaust manifold, which is why there is no more pics cause of stress and time so i removed the turbo again, welded a nut onto the stud, heated up the manifold, wound it out and fitted a new stud (crisis levelled)
anyway after that it went together reasonably well, some arkward positions for the water and oil pipes but sorted it, unplugged the coil lead and wound it over.... plugged it back in and it fired up lovely
left it ticking over till the temp was at 3oclock, by that time there was a fair amount of steam from the exhaust and a tiny leak from the poorly designed rubber water pipe by the cam pulley but soon fixed...
test drive all seemed well so i opened it up, no smoke no steam and pulling well and hittin 1.2 bar in all but first gear
it'll take a week or so to get used to the difference in the way the turbo winds up ie it seemed to take longer to spool up but had more pull further up the revs??
but yeah i'm pretty chuffed with the result but like funk would i want to do it again
i've done about 100 miles since then and it is now reachin 1.3 bar
on another plus side the 15g i took off the turbine side was uncracked too
