How did I miss this?
1. Disconnect the battery or it will throw a permanent srs warning.
2. Undo the torx screws on the bottom of the steering wheel cowel.
3. Pop the top of the cowl off, it's connected to the cluster fascia with a bit of fabric.
4 Where the fabric meets the cluster fascia, grab the fascia and give it a good yank and the lower half will pop out then grab the now exposed sides of the fascia and yank it right off.
5 there are 4 torx screws holding the cluster in DON'T DROP ANY they disappear forever!
6. unplug the green 14 pin connector and tadaa!

Symptoms....
(intermittent)...... Fuel, temperature, speedo and rev counter die. SOMETIMES....up restart alls ok. SOMETIMES not. All dials fail as and when they feel like it.
Warning lights seem ok.
Spoke to a company in Rochester who specialise in repair of said clusters and the chap agrees its a cluster fault. £184.80 to repair it inc postage. Extra for removal and refitting of the cluster. £300+ish for failed dash.

I'm guessing you've seen my thread on this matter? there are 2 possibilitys, going by the symptoms you explained.
1. Motorola chip has dry joints and needs resoldering - usually £30-£40 at a tv/mobile phone repair shop.
2. Power control failure - several capacitors around the top of the board by the big transistor, fail and need to be replaced. Your symptoms sound like the latter.
When mine went, it was the chip but after months of soldering it, the whole bloody thing gave up and nearly caught fire on the M3.
£732.50 should your customer ask. for that I got a remanufactured one (looked new to me) with led lamps and a few tweaks...
