I remember a review of the P1 V70 TDI and it was faster than a 911 from that speed too

I find that most of the evos and scubbies turbos run out of puff at about 90, at least compared to the volvo turbo. I cant beat much off the line so dont really bother, unless there is room for the car to get into 3rd gear, its a whole different kettle of fish then.

I prefer my power to be mid range, im more interested in a safe fast overtake than blasting between the lights. I dont think a scubbie or an evo could match the volvo in that all important 40 - 70 mph over take manuover.

But the evo and the scubbie will MURDER the volvo when you get into the bends, they are designed to be fast sprint type cars, and they do it very well indeed, the volvo is not really a corner eater, its a straight line animal.

I think that there are plenty of cars a lot faster than a volvo, but i also think that whilst they maybe able to get out in front of the volvo they will never outrun one.

I got followed by an R8 once coming into glasgow... the bits where you go off the M-way in one lane, with cars coming off and on (anyone will know it's a bit of a nightmare!) like those junctions around Manchester.

between 40-50 on the slips roads and then blasting up to a bit quicker than that when there was a clear lane, there was only about 2-3 car lengths in the difference on a 40mph increment - he chased me for some gaps and closed me down a bit but didn't manage to pull along side to take my place (even when I pulled in to the inside lane under acceleration to see what he could do as he obv wanted to get past) - most satisfying.

So his car was quicker... but not really enough to be spectacular (considering how much extra he probably paid!)

All the people who go on about N/A... have obviously never driven a torquey turbo

When I had a 9000 T16 the acceleration was brutal to say the least, so was the torque steer.

I read somewhere that 5th gear acceleration on the 9000 Aero was quicker than a Ferrari Testerossa!

Both Saab and Volvo's high pressure turbo cars are not to be underestimated but quicker than an Evo I would have to see it to believe it and even if they could be quicker in a straight line theres no beating an Evo on the track, they are built for that purpose which a volvo will never be.

Think its fair to say that there are a fair few cars that put our Volvos to shame, but as an all round good car i.e. power, load capacity, longevity (excluding santa20 ), cost, etc (feel free to add more), can it be said that they are pretty hard to match up to?

All this talk of Scoober poos and Evos make's me miss my quattro S4 from a standing start and in bad weather and even in the mid range it would kill most T5s and Rs, and with the uprated suspension she was nifty on the corners too! The only thing I dont miss is the repair and service cost and around 5 mpg less than the R and not as spacious or maybe quite as comfortable. I think to really to beat a T5 or an R your talking Merc AMG, (not just a late 90s c36) BMW M3 or M5,Audi S4, RS4, S6, RS6 orJag XJR! Or dare I say chipped BMW 335/535D All of which are more expensive to buy run insure and maintain.
Evos and Scubies are just plasticy rally cars and are no where near a volvo interms of refinement.

Quite right - you can go faster, but a T5 is a baby grand tourer that can't be beaten for the price - you could get a 335d or 535d but no matter how good it is, you still pay the price of looking like (and being treated like) an aggressive knob when you're out on the roads.
