There was the 2319cc t5 engine, and the 2435cc 2.5T engine (and obviously the 2.0 litre variants aswell). 2.4 and the 2.5 engine are the same cc.
I'm guessing they downgraded it to 2.4 as that is what its closest to, and also because of emissions/environmental ratings and such crap. In the first instance, I guess 2.5 looked better (bigger number) back in the 90s

I thought there was also some issue with the cylinder wall thickness causing problems on the 2.5ltr, which is why the 2.4ltr became the 'norm'.
