As someone who has experience of running the Volvo ecu and a standalone ecu along side each other i am in a good position to comment (i ran the peril on the Volvo (gearbox) ecu alongside the Autronic when it was still an auto)
There are many ill informed people that think that going the standalone ecu route will remove the safety features this is wrong, the beauty of the standalone route is you set the limits .......
Good luck to you guys that are going the standalone route, i think there will be quite a few of us volvo lovers going this route as you will find its so easy to change the car to suit your needs ,you can keep all the Volvo safety features if you need to but can also have many more in place and also have an alarm/immobiliser and even abs...

I made a harness up for the VEMS for my mate....it allowed passthrough of all many features to the OEM ECU but left the fuel etc open for the VEMS to control...worked like a charm
Made it like a piggy back that actually works lol
Hi Iain
It would not be correct for me to say without some proof but from my experience with my own car one thing it does not suffer from without the maf is lack of power.....
The fields of adjustment and standard options with the decent standalone systems far outway what the volvo ecu will give you,if you look at most of the higher hp cars in sweden they mostly go this route i wonder why....
For me it was the only way for what i had planned this may not be the way for everyone but not many people are running a genuine 500 plus hp 850.....

So are you saying the MAF is the limiting factor and not the ecu, what about the turbo tuner ecu thats a clever bit of kit, wouldnt this cater for needs until the maf was pushed to 100%,which no one seems to have a figure for. what extra's do you get with stand alone that a TT ECU cant supply yet.
The Maf is a limiting factor as well as the ecu the Turbo Tuner is an excellent product and do plan to try one out soon but for me and what i had planned i wanted to go a different route.
As for extras i have build in features for traction control/launch control/flat shift/i can also control the aquamist completely and even which of the two jets i want to come on and when all within the ecu and just require a switch and a sensor to operate the feature.
Do you have a target hp ? what ever it is good luck do show how your getting on with some graphs

I am pretty sure the MAF is a limiting factor....ultimately.....the MAF and oem ECU were also meant to be a limiting factor on the T4....Pyaap made 420+ on all standard ecu and maf I believe....so although it is a limit.....not that much of a limit really..depending on target hp of course...long gone are the days of a 19T and a remap it seems. lol
How on earth did he get the MAF to flow enough air... mine is saturating already and I am nowhere near 420+. I suppose I could ask him! Or see how the NOmex works out.

Hi Russ. Not a lot yet, as I haven't got it running properly! Must be about 260 or thereabouts. BSR stage 3 ECU upgrade, but it throws the MIL light and two codes (MAF flow and boost pressure) when we wind it up further and it rises past 6k rpm. I'm part way through wiring up an Omex to get rid of the MAF altogether

How do you guys get that power onto the road? Mine is tame compared to some, but even so I can struggle to stop the wheels scrabbling in third in the dry with a slight steering input. Even with an lsd it must be misbehaving. I'm sure some scientifically minded chappy once said 250bhp was the max for front wheel drive.........
LSD's are a fantastic invention.
Al...you smell!! yeah that's right, I went there lol
Guessing some form of Garrett, GT3076 would be my guess
