Oil Question....?

i am preparing to have a service done on the car, but wish to know peoples thoughts on the oil to use.

its a 1999 C70 T5, with the RICA 304 map, fully serviced and done just over 100k right now.

as some of you know i work in a volvo dealership, so obviously i have got advice from the fitters there

they all have told me to use the castrol 10w40 semi synthetic oil, as its the thickest one.

i dont mind, but obviously i just want to have what is best for the car. in work we have 3 grades of oil available:

Castrol 10w40 Semi Synthetic
Castrol 5w30 Fully Synthetic
Castrol 0w30 Fully Synthetic

ideally it would be one of these that i use, as we allways have a good supply of all three, and as its for my own car, i would not have to buy it, which is a bonus.

i was thinking that the best one there would be the 5w30 fully synthetic, but would like opinions of the good people on here, what do you think/use?

As its free, go for the 10w40. If you had to pay volvo, then id say none of them

yeah i will be mate, i used to change the oil in my vectra every 3 months regardless of mileage, filter cost me £1.30 from vauxhall, and oil was 'on tap', so made the most of it - even have a nice little stock pile of the 10w40 built up as it happens. i have only had the car just over a month but its due a service so will be done very soon, in work. i will even do something i have never done and may even pay them something for doing it so i can have the stamp and have it updated on the volvo computer too. i will do all the intermediate servicing myself though, and obviously keep reciepts for parts too and build up a healthy profile of the care taken of it.

10w40 seems about the best choice here so far then, thanks for the replies

When i bought my C70 t5 last month it had always been run on 05/30 fully synthetic but got rather nervous on how it evapourated so quickly, i spoke to Volvo and they told me this was normal, but on the service its just had iv started using Castrol 10/40 semi as it says in the manual that you can use it and its not used a single drop,

Iv run 10/40 semi in all my cars over the years and also in my 21t and never had any problems with it.

Good thread! I have always used Mobil 1 in my cars (5/30 not the O/40) But i have had doubts over the adhesion when not in use of such a thin oil. Think i will be running mine on 10/40 semi...save myself a few quid as well.

I really like magnatec 10-40w but its got a bit expensive now. 2 years ago it was £7-10 cheaper!
I used it in my first T5 and did 20k in her and Ive done 34K in this one.
I like to change every 5k in view of the 160k & 330BHP
I think after 4-5000 oil looks not to good anyway, semis are good cos the minerals give you low rev cold protection and the synthetics give you high reving protection.

i have a different view to all so far.....
you cant beat a good fully synthetic...
and a good one is comma 5w40...
i don't use it my self i use an equivalent 5w40 fully synthetic which is branded but made by comma. its supplied by AJ auto parts and called planet oil.
i do agree with the 5000 mile change though. that makes good sense regardless of what the manufacturer recommends.
and just for information i have been a technician for 14 years

Last service it was filled with Shell Ultra Helix 5w40 Fully Synthetic.

10w40 would be the nearest to that

Definately go for a fully synthetic. Simple fact is that within reason they don't break down like the organic oil so will protect the engine for longer.

Nothing beats a good regular service interval as well.

With all those options the original questioner myust be totally confused. As always, it's "Ask around and then make up your own mind!"
