V70R AWD how do they compare to 850R

Probably been asked before but what are the V70 R AWD (classic shape) like, being awd are they any slower than a 850R ? Are they a better ride than an 850R ? Does the awd running gear suffer with any problems, if so are they expensive to fix. Do all of the awd V70R's have twin exh pipes. What is the split of the drive is it 50/50. Are their many differences between the 850R & V70R apart from styling, has the engine got better internals or the suspension any better ?

    Thanks Simon.

HI Simon not sure if someone has gone from a 850r to a V70R AWD,

But the early awd's upto 99 both phases had a single exhaust it was only the later ph3 adaptive auto 5 speed that had the twin tip and a 19t 265 bhp as standard, they came out in late 99-00 on a V-W plate,
I am picking up my ph2 auto awd next Wednesday and that is a 99 model single tip 4 speed adaptive auto with a 18t and 250 bhp as standard, 98-99 S-T plate,
Just to clarify it all together with the Auto awd's, the ph1 auto had a single tip 4sp auto non adaptive with sport economy and winter buttons, 16t turbo and 240bhp as standard. upto 98 on a R plate,

    Gary.

In terms of reliability with AWD, you have to replace the tyres in sets of 4 as the tread paterns have to be the same otherwise it can knacker the AWD system.
Later ME7 cars may have slightly stronger internals, but theres more electric technology to go wrong !

On the plus side you will find V70 Rs with less miles on the clock as the youngest 850Rs will be almost 10 years old, saying that I bought a low miles 850 T5 a year ago of flea bay with full history, but lack of miles and use meant loads of rubber parts needed replacing , I ended up speanding a grand on her! Mind you shes all good now.

In terms of driving 850 T5 , T5R and 850 R auto have a 15gturbo this means diesel like low down power with a real hustle of tourgue available from around 2000 rpm making them very very drivable, the downside being less poke at the top of the rev range but a very pleasurable drive indeed.
Manual 850R s,c,v70T5 and early auto s,v70 R have a 16 T turbo these give a good turn of speed from around 2700 rpm and give higher top end speed.
The 15g as standard is faster than a ferrari testorasa in 5th from 50-70 mph making very relaxed spirited progress.
Manual V70R has an 18T I havent driven one but have been a passenger in one these offer strong power from 3000 rpm but lack the 15 G low down umph well atleast they seem to .
19T I have only driven a modified 850R with one of these and it was auto top end was much better than the 15 G set up.
So the 15 G give the best low down umpgh and possibly the worst touring economy because you are on the turbo more.
18 and 19t give the best top end grunt and offer the best touring economy as the the 19T is hardly spinning at 90 mph in top!
I would say drive as many examples as you can and choose and enjoy!
I know a few folk have missed the smaller 15G low down response in every day driving but with bigger turbos come the bigger overall power output its a difficult one , In the ideal world I would have a 15g for all my town and country roads and a 19T for motorways autobahns and straight roads without camras.

That took a little while to read ! I've had my 850R for 2 yrs & just thinking of changing it soon, think i will go for the late 99 with twin pipes ( did they make a manual in the twin pipe model) if i decide to stick with Volvo, may go back to M power again (M5) but the Volvo estate is just so usefull ! Plus the BMW meet up's & forums aren't as freindly as the Volvo ones !

Ain't that a BMW fact lol. Last of the old AWD breed spec. as follows.....................

Phase 3 were produced in 1999 and early 2000 (T - W reg) and were only available with the B5244RT engine 19T turbo 265bhp/350nm and 5-speed adaptive automatic gearbox. These also use the ME7 engine management system as with the phase 2 cars. These cars were fitted with twin tail pipes and vented disc's all-round.
V70R AWD where Angels fear to tread (sorry about the pun) can you believe 4 new tyres every time Gaz?
