    Geartronic - T5 or S60R best ?

I'm thinking of buying a S/H S60 T5 but wondered if stretching the budget to an S60R is worth considering. You might think it's a no-brainer, but I don't want a manual gearbox and the geartronic R seems to be slower than the T5 on 0-60 times. From what I've read, the R would handle a bit better but at the expense of about 2 mpg and have about the same power given the AWD transmission losses. So any advantages look marginal or non-existant for a geartronic. Any thoughts? Apart from slating me for liking an auto that is!
I'm guessing that servicing costs would be about the same and the T5 would give me about 22 mpg and the R, 20 mpg - does that sound about right as I usually seem to get 4 or 5 less than car makers quote?

You'd be able to pick up a geartronic T5 for around £7-8k upwards. A geartronic 'R' will set you back £15k at the minimum, so a couple of MPG is not really worth any consideration!

I'd go with a T5 and then spend £1-2k on tuning it. You'd still have £5k left over at a minimum and it'll cost less to run, too.

Thanks guys. I'm not too concerned about mpg but wondered if my guess on mpg was right for both cars. Sounds like it is.

I'm more interested to know if you think there's any good reason for getting the R over a T5, given that I want a geartronic?

Hi mate welcome to the forum

If cash aint an issue I dont see anyone turning down an R for a T5

R all the way for the AWD and 4C Suspension, Pegasus Alloys, Bigger brakes, Nicer bumpers and the R interior

If none of that appeals to you get a T5 and tune it to 300 ponies

i own a s60r manual, the awd and 4c chassis makes the R great in the wet twisty stuff, the fwd t5 has problems getting power down in the wet.

in terms of performance between the R and t5 geartronic, it is very slim.

mpg, mine will return 23-25mpg average, i think the geartronic is slightly worse.

but the manual is faster, why not the manual??

and everything else fraz says, i agree.

All of those can be added on at a later date quite easily, but, they are difficult to get hold of unless you pay dealer prices.

time u paid for parts, and paid for fitting, and the R interior, would be a nightmare cost wise and fiting

would be cheaper to get R, plus has better tuning potential for the R engine, stronger internals, etc

    imho

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like the R wouldn't outperform the T5 by much if they're geartronic. A T5 is favorite then unless a really nice R comes up in the mean time.
Why not a manual? I just like an auto. It is so much less hassle to drive. So long as the auto is still quick it's fine for me.

The S60R feels a bit limited with the GT box, and it won't allow you to get the most out of the car. If you're going for the S60R, go for the manual. If you're going for the T5, both manual or auto are good.
