CAT A = scrap only, no useable parts, probably burnt out
CAT B = can be used as parts but chassis needs to be disposed of
CAT C = Car completely unrepairable, insurer pays out
CAT D = damaged to the exctent of uneconomical repair, insurer pays out
CAT F = fire damaged un repairable.
C and D can be rebuilt by a person and once inspected bt VOSA can get the V5 re issued and car can be back on road , cat F is a different kettle of fish, car can still be repaured if someone has a big enough heart but it is obviously not economical!!!
As a foot note to this ..I have had a CAT C car that is stolen recovered with keys and no damage but some insurers will class it as that and to get it wound back is an impossibility!!!

been in a smash i expect
if it won't break try harder !!!!!!!
Can I just say.....
Cat A: Usually just wreckage(burnt out shell etc..)
Cat B: Break for parts only, can only be bought by a licenced salvage yard
Cat C: Repairable but must have a VIC test before it can be put back on the
road
Cat D: Usually minor damage, no test needed other than the usuall MOT
Dont mean to pic but I deal with this every day( I work for a salvage company)
My current car is Cat D and had very little wrong with it, someone had attempted to break into the car, damaging the drivers door. If it where cat C I would be cautious because these are usually quite badly damaged.

I'll let you off then................Hmmm

many thanks for that. IF a catD is repaired properly etc etc it may still be worth looking at as at 120000miles and full dealer history or am i better carrying on my search elsewhere?
Lets just agree that Insurance companys (and all assessors) are a law unto them selves. We regularly have to get a vehicle re cat'd because the assessor was either an idiot or blind.....
Personal taste..i would still go and satisfy yourself .... you may not even know!!!Originally Posted by chich100
Depends on the damage, what state the cars in anyway and how much he's willing to drop the price. If you throw the fact that its a Cat D in his face he should drop it a fair bit. I got mine for only £600
tomcat its a 1996 r estate and i think its priced right and worth a look but its a 200mile round trip, but i think my curiosty will get the better of me!
My V70 is also recorded as a cat "D" and has been repaired to the highest standards see the attached piccy noting that all bits that are missing have now been fitted and the car returned to oe spec and i can also confirm that a cat d car does not need to be vosa or vic checked before it goes back on the road but it must pass an mot just as any other car would

I repaired a cat C Megane coupe. It had been properly tapped up the bum and the chassis in the boot was bent. But I thought (at the time) it was worth a go. I had it straightened out and I did loads of work myself on getting the front splitter and the rear bumper cover (plastic) back together. It looked really good when it was finished. Have to say though that you have (as a cat C) to put it through a VIC (vehicle inspection check) - bit like a mega MOT - which it passed. Personally I thought that the cat C was a bit fierce considering.
In future I would only undertake such a thing as a project to keep. Didnt make very much in the end and I dont think it was worth the hassle.

My old T5 ended up a cat D and someone applied for the log book for it so I assume it will be back on the road soon if not already....
