    Tuning Question???

I know VT anounced that they could do a 450hp upgrade on the new R, but what are the limits of tuning on the P2 T5?

How much in the R is used in the T5? I know that the the T5 is not 4x4 but what BHP can be achieved?

    Mac.

I would say the limiting factor is the depth of your pockets.

Remember BHP isnt the be all and end all of car tuining, much more to it than that.

I would say the con rods are the main limiting factor with the t5 engines .

I've seen videos of modded T5's that have 500bhp. its possible, just depends what you want to spend

This power thing is an interesting thing for me (spent many hours thinking about it). So apologies for going on a bit

First off - bear in mind the equation

    BHP = torque x revs /5252

BHP is a myth. It is just a mathematical equation. What I mean is you can have the same power output from a low torque/high rev engine (eg VTEC) or a high torque/low rev engine (eg a diesel). It is more important as to where that power is delivered. You can get a T5 engine to deliver 800 bhp theoretically so long as you could make either the torque rise or rev higher. What happens though on the road is you spend most of your time (when going hard) between 3K and 6K - so it is very important how the map of the car delivers the power. Oh and cost is a factor for all of us.

If you look at the power chart for my ex-C70 (in my VB garage) - and I know that with the right hardware it can pull at over 400 Nm right to the end - which would give me over 400bhp. This would not strain anymore on the internals as such - as no more torque is applied - but it would mean to get that level of power (based on the equation above) I'd have to be doing some seriously naughty speeds. #gasp#

Usuability (day to day) is an important thing to consider - at least for the queens highway. Supposedly we can only go to 70 mph - so everyone should in theory be driving a tuned D5 - lots of low down grunt?? However us petrol heads (me included) say ££££££ to that - I want more!! I think that the stage II RICA should be more than adequate for anyones needs??

Higher torque puts a bigger demand on tyres and grip levels. I have proven it is possible to get yourself into big trouble with just 340bhp.

Mind you it still doesnt stop me wanting more? LOL

Exactly what I meant with my second statement, just in a little more detail lol.

So 340-350 is acheivable in the t5 without internal engine modifications/alterations?

Just the map, maybe exhaust etc??

You have to be careful on boost levels with the earlier engines - as Gary demonstrated on last Sunday - You are quite near the limit with 340.
I know that Adam has bent 2 engines. Redbrick has bent a rod in his 850R.
ME7 already has stronger bits - especially as you get into MY2000 and beyond.
Spesh has beaten this (as much through trial and error) on the 854 by rebuilding it.
So I believe it is possible to deliver that level of power with the right knowledge as much as anything.

Yes, it is definately safely achievable on stock engine internals.

Maybe "myth" is the wrong term/poor choice of words. What I am trying to express, in my own wobbly way, is that power is a measure of work done and as such is not as real as say the rate at which the engine turns (RPM) or the twisting force it exerts (torque) which are more directly measureable. I was trying to convey my opinion that BHP is like BB said not the whole picture. BHP seems to be banded around with no real understanding and after all the figures quoted tend to be peak power (over a very small rev range).

it is a good point, Ian - I for one wish that WHP was industry standard and not just on bikes.

Yeh, but were talkin about the new t5's s60/v70 not v70/s70/

What are the limits with regards to upgrades and tuning etc.

340 bhp is safely achievable on the stock internals with a suitable turbo and exhaust and remap. I'd say the MAX power achievable on the stock P1 engine internals is around 400 bhp (seriously!!!), but I'm not sure how reliable it would be.

For the phase 2, I'd say approx 460 bhp max, but again it needs a suitable turbo, exhaust, and remap to do this. But I'm not sure how reliable that would be.

What turbo would you go up to if you were upgrading the phase 2's?

We know the 19t is volvos biggest for the phase 1 cars, but what about the phase 2 t5s and R's?

Adam, you said the R engine is good for over 500hp, so is 460 the max on the t5 engine?

would the t5 and the R need the same exhaust and turbo to get to these figures...?

I am thinking about buying a new car, and dont know whether the R is worth the extra money when the s60/v70 t5s are going so cheap.

    Cheers,

    Mac
