Replaceing the head! Is it a big job???

    Right,

My poor bleedin S70 has been stood for 4 weeks, awaiting a lifter and a cam, and the guy is messing me around.
Salvo have offered me a replacement head for £232 all in, and then I can get a headgasket set for £40 from Bromleys.
Is it a major job to swap them over??? Do I need anything else, other than the gasket set??? The last head I swapped, was on a MK1 Escort

    Cheers in advance
    Thankyou, Goodnight....much love

If you have mechanical knowledge and understand TDC and can work methodically then you should be able to do it...once all the ancilleries are out the way teh job becomes alot clearer. Go for it ... I have tackled lots of jobs with common sense and have not failed yet..in some maybe been longer than someone who does it lots but the job was still done! I once replaced a timing belt at the side of a road along way from home on my RS 2000 using a long screwdriver and the rotor arm to determine TDC using the tools i carried along with some of my mates and no torque wrench....got it started and got it home

TDC, not heard that for years! I wouldnt mind though, this guy deals in BM's all the time! I offered to get the head over 2 weeks ago, but he wants to "save me money" by just replacing the cam and lifter! I'd of rather had the car back and spent a couple of hundred more!!!
So, do I need anything else apart from the head gasket set???

    Anyone??
    Thankyou, Goodnight....much love

    Liddo,

Forty quid for a gasket set - that's damn cheap, I thought they were well over a hundred for the 850 / x70! Does that kit include the bolts and everything? If not you'll need to budget for these too I think.

If you need any help with the job just let me know. Never removed an 850 head before (the only one ever done was a mates Morris Marina van) but I can provide an extra pair of hands if necessary and I'm only down the M57 from you in Roby, Huyton.

    Regards

    Andy

If you decide to get it back from this bloke but don't want to do it yourself give Keith at Noth West Trading a call. They're a Volvo Specialist in Wigan and should be able to sort you out. Link below.

North West Trading wont touch it they said, they only do spares!!! Low Hall in Wigan will replace the lifters at £28 a go x 20 then the cam!!!!!

I think the gasket set doesnt include the bolts, but i dont think their that dear and I think I leave the car where it is for now. Merseyswede in Walton were very good, I might give them a ring

    LOL.

I live in the estate at the back of the Crofters / Leisure Centre. You think it's posh? It's not bad but I wouldn't say it's posh.

You seen the prices of houses on Tarbock Road? Bloody fortune they are!

I'll be moving to a little village in Cheshire soon not all that far from Frodsham and Helsby. Now THAT's posh round there (although my new house is very modest).

I'm surprised NWT don't want it. Merseyswede are good - I forgot about them. Having said that, I've only used them once and although the service was good, everytime I called for advice or with a query they didn't seem too keen to help even though I made it clear I would buy the parts through them and thus pay over the odds for parts in return for friendly advice.

I guess garages don't like people doing their won work for obvious reasons.

Like I say, if you do decide to have a go yourself just let me know and I'll happily pop over.

    Regards

    Andy

hi, once you got the cam cover off, i would think it's all down hill

4.7hrs to replace the cam cover
8.6hrs to do the head gasket

it will take longer than this, i use the times as a quide line to how difficult the job will be,
head bolt max length is 158mm, but i would replace them anyway

    hope this helps
