    Second hand 4C shocks

What are people’s thoughts regarding buying second hand 4C shocks?

Is there a point when having covered a certain mileage point it’s bite the bullet time and buy the new Monroe ones on eBay?

Just interested in experience of life expectancy. What I’ve read so far would suggest 80k to 100k miles is doing well.

    Thanks

Never buy second hand shocks, ever!

80-100k is about right for any oil filled shock. After that, they will be well past their best.

I know the shock are expensive but what do you expect from a car that cost around £43k OTR when new!

Don't forget you'll need to replace the spring support plates and top hats too plus the suspension will need calibration once your done, not to mention a four wheel alignment.

Do the calibration AFTER the alignment.

    Thanks for responses.

Would you have part numbers handy for top hats and support plates?

    Thanks

    Front

The rear top mounts never really fail or need replacing but make sure you check them for integrity. If suspect, get them from Volvo main dealer.
The fronts are prone to failure. The rubber top hats crack due to fatigue and the support plate bearings always fails and get graunchy. Worn bearings will hugely affect your alignment and self centering, so just replace them. You can buy the parts from Volvo but the support plates alone are about £70 ea and the top hats are about £35 ea.

Thanks again Lee. You'll soon get fed up with all my questions! But people like yourself are what make this and other forums invaluable. No point reinventing the wheel.

When I finally pick the R up I'll add these to the ever growing list of things to properly check, including all the front end bushes. And then work my way to the rear.

Best to start with a sorted car, handling wise, to feel the ride how it should be.

    Cheers
